Man that trumpet player. Freddie Hubbard. Just insane.
Hubbard before he got on the juice was a mother. Both the studio and live versions of Red Clay are amazing.
I’ll check that out on the way home today. Don’t know why these guys have to go to drugs and/or alcohol. I don’t think I would need anything else if I could play like that.
Be there or be a square.
this one too
It starts off innocently enough with a nice intro by Coltrane, followed by an exquisite piano solo by McCoy Tyner. And then with the bass solo, depending on your perspective, the tune either descends into chaos or ascends to heretofore unseen levels of perfection. Coltrane adds to the chaos or perfection to end the piece. And all the while, Elvin Jones on the drums is keeping time, keeping time.
9 minutes of mostly improvisation. This is what it’s all about. And that sax solo. Wow.
I read somewhere that eating pineapple helps to-
Oh, crap, OK, never mind.
For a second, I was excited that there might be others on this board who like jazz and are interested in discussing the music.
Nice fusion. I’ll check it out more later.
You silly, silly man.
How fortunate for you, then, that you were able to discover the actual truth so quickly
Sometimes I love those guys and other times I can’t stand them. You heard Billy Cobham’s “Spectrum”? Tony William’s Lifetime? Soft Machine’s jazzier stuff? The Ginger Baker Trio? I can listen to all of those albums more consistently.

I really, really love Red Baron from that album. And I think all fusion has that effect (of loving sometimes and hating at other times). The problem now is that nobody buys CDs and albums anymore so you don’t get to fall in love with a tune months and months after the initial purchase.
Agreed. Also, most people just don’t have the attention span required for jazz. I got into a lot of jazz back when I was buying vinyl. Later on I found this CD store in Taichung that had a ton of ECM releases. Great stuff. Keith Jarrett’s “The Survivor’s Suite.” It took me a while to get into that one, but once I did I loved it.
What I love most about Spectrum is that Deep Purple’s Tommy Bolin plays on it. I believe he died of an overdose soon after.
No to all! I’m not a huge jazz guy but I like a few things and listen occasionally. Will check these out, thank!
