Best location to put a tattoo?

From the folks that have one, where in your opinion would be the best choice? I have already decided on the design, which is a bit big -about 10cms- and the artist says that he’d prefer I choose the location -where to put the ink. Shoulder is the obvious choice but being a flat image I fear it will be distorted. Tummy? Nope. Down the back? heck, no. Legs? Where? Ankle would be… maybe if we shrink the design.

Yes, I know, middle age crisis is striking badly -BTW, if anyone has a sports car to sell… - which brings us to where the tatoo would stand the test of time better?

I had a dream last night I was scrubbing a tattoo off one of my nieces. It was on her lower back off to one side. It seemed like a cool place for a girl to have one, and easy to hide when necessary. Not a good place to have one if you want to show it off in public often. Really a bizarre dream

My mum has a friend (in her 70s) with “DNR” tatooed on her chest. That’s definitely one that’ll stand the test of time. At least until the point where the guy with the defibrillator has to pay attention to it. And totally badass too - wouldn’t have minded knowing her when she was a few decades younger.

Sadly, unless you’re a genuine gangsta with matching gold teeth and gunshot scars, no tattoo looks artistic when you’re old and wrinkly.

Maybe if you first posted some pictures of the “canvas” we could make better suggestions about where to put the ink!

The upper arm or shoulder are places where you can easily hide it for things like work, but you can also show it off in public places if you so please.

Chris: arm is off as it looks better on a flat surface, not rounded.

We need somewhere flat in Icon…

Rotalsnart: the canvas is dead winter white, with the ocassional winter leg forest growing. Wanna picture of that? What has been seen cannot be unseen.

Reminds me of a story a guy told this weekend, about his male, bit overweight Taiwanese coworker who was bending over doing some stuff and the back view revealed for all the world to see this gorgeous pink thong…

Finley: I’m also getting the medical tatoo: allergic to fish and nonsense, with little angel wings. on my wrist. that’s gonna hurt.
Women in my family do not get wrinklly fast, but we do live a long time.

Louisfriend: yep, I was thinking like midriff, mid back, somewhere, as said, flat. Problem would be how to show it off then. :ponder:

I guess that’s why the 80’s were invented.

Oh, this is a great straight line. Possible answers?

  1. The skin.
  2. Your drunk friend.
  3. Over previous tattoo of ex-girlfriend’s name.
  4. Fantasy Island landing strip.
  5. ugliesttattoos.com
  6. Prison
  7. On YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=2xgwRitTgU4

Oh, I am well know for -really, innocently- selecting the most interesting titles. Remember “tips on removing scooter oil from pet”?

Just saw the episode in How I met your mother when Ted gets a tatoo. Interesting names Barney comes up to decribe the, ehem, piece of art. My favorite? Panama City license plate. Obviously, that location is ruled out…

A heartwarming tale of a couple who chatted long-distance, fell in love, met, married a month later, then she let him tattoo her face with his name. Includes nekkid photos:

So, mostly circus freaks, with a few “aspiring tattoo artists” and one wife-of-a-rich-doctor who was probably heavily into the kinky stuff.

I’m not seeing any circuses around here, and don’t recall if you have an OWP yet, sooooooo. . . . :howyoudoin:

Best place to put a tattoo: on someone else.

Icon, you’re a braver woman than me.

Impaler: it’s history, evolution, and at least interesting. sigh

Petrichor: at my age, i’ve earned it. Moreover, teh only ones seeing my naked body these days are doctors, so, better enrich the landscape, lest they get bored with teh same old, same old.

Icon, go for in between the shoulder blades. I’ve been thinking of a tattoo for some time too, but it’ll be on the ankle-foot region, coz well…you could go for the back. No?

mmm, I was more inclined on the suggestion by midriff. Between shoulder blades should work too, but have to ask.

Oh, sure, I agree. But there just aren’t enough circuses around nowadays for all the tattooed freaks to join. No wonder they’re unemployed.

Have you considered going in in lingerie? It has the virtue of not being permanent, and doesn’t turn into a blurry (and permanent) ink blob after a few years.

Icon, I can understand the need to change yourself, but a tramp stamp might not be the best way to do it, unless you have a very particular reason for wanting one - if you did, you’d already know where to put it. Without getting too morbid about it, a midlife crisis can be very constructive if you take it as a chance to examine what you’re going to do with the final couple of decades of your (useful) existence; it forces you to make concrete plans. I realise this is all a bit OT, but a tat is a lot more permanent than, say, lingerie, and its (unknown) potential downsides are larger than its (known) upsides. At least just do it with henna first and see how it suits you.

And yes, I know Impaler is just having a laugh about the lingerie. But I think he has a point.

Some good advice there of course but tattoos are pretty damn common these days and if you want one and have thought about it just do it. Where to place it, all personal choice isn’t it. I would like to be able to see mine though lots of people stick them on their backs.
Then again I’m probably never going to get a tattoo.

Depends on the design. Can we see it? Shoulders are cool, but it ruins the rest of the back…if it is something you can spread to more tattoos later, that’s cool. I would say middle of the back, more balanced, and that way both shoulders are open if you want to balance it out with something else.
