Best places to travel solo in Taiwan

I’m wondering what kinda places should make a good weekend trip for traveling alone in Taiwan? Help me out by recommending something that is accessible by MRT, trains, and taxis. I’ll like to experience something worth my time here in Taiwan too instead of being stuck working all the time.

Depends on what you’re into. If tea culture is your thing I hear Wanhua district in Taipei is popular :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Where are you based, most places are accessible by public transport.

In a remote area Minxiong, Chiayi county.

You can look some options with the MRT Taipei Metro Pass (48 hours of unlimited travel on Taipei Metro and can be purchased at any MRT station )

In the following article you can find some popular spots nearby MRT stations

Taiwan Tourist Bus (台灣好行) has some interesting routes. The website might give you some ideas. It has English if you need it. I myself really like the north coast along highway 2.

That bus sucks cause it comes only several times a day. You can do the exact same with the 860(To Sanzhi), 861(To Sanzhi), 862(To Keelung) 863(to Jinshan), 790(Jinshan to Keelung).

Something as in what are your interests? Church, culture, night life, beach, mountain, city, museums, fitness, meeting locals, hanging out with foreigners

Culture, sightseeing, and places that will be a relaxing mini vacation.

Solo or with others doesn’t make much of a difference in Taiwan I think, except with regards to splitting costs of taxis. Plus how comfortable you’d be taking a long-distance taxi on your own.

And of course it depends on personality if you want to go to night spots at all, or if you’re fine going alone, or you prefer to go with friends.

That doesn’t look that remote - pretty close to Chiayi City itself, isn’t it? That’d be important for getting to a train station.

No scootering I take it? Scooter rides in the nearby mountains, for example in the Guanziling area, are fantastic. I believe a lot of the most beautiful areas are difficult to access by public transit.

Do not visit Taipei until we stop whining about the awful winter we’ve having up here. But if you’re limited to only public transit, Taipei is probably the best destination, for mountains and hiking too, since taking buses up Yangmingshan is relatively easy.

Tainan and its different historical sites are definitely worth a day or two, but if you’re in Chiayi, you’ve probably gone there. You’ve also probably already gone to Alishan, which is … eh … accessible? I’ll give it that.

Taroko Gorge is world class but I’m not sure if you could get there from Chiayi on a weekend.

Penghu is great, and I presume you can still get a plane or ferry there from Chiayi. But I’ve got around the islands by scooter. I don’t know what it’s like with public transit; probably plenty of people just hire a taxi for a day, but I don’t know how much that would cost. (It’s also a great place for a first time riding a scooter. That’s what I did.)

You can get to Kenting quite easily. Jump on the HSR Chiayi down to Zuoying it takes about 30 minutes. From Zuoying there’s a frequent bus service down to Kenting. The bus takes a couple of hours more or less.

Given your location, Tainan should be your first target. Find a nice B&B and enjoy exploring the town.

In summer, try the mountains of Chiayi. I really enjoyed staying at Small Swiss Guesthouse. I’d go back there in a flash.

If possible, go to the dmv and have them issue you a local license based on presenting your home license. Then just rent a car from iRent and you can go anywhere
