Best shoe shine methods

What’re the best methods to shine a pair of shoes?

I do a decent enough job, but could do a lot better.
Read something the other day, which involved a lighter.
Best I’ve had so far cost me a few dirhams in Morocco.

Spit and Polish.

They don’t call it spit & polish for nuthin’

Looks like someon hasn’t served his country, must be due to his multiple loyalties

You don’t get to be snarky here until you answer the questions, as promised, there.

Use the lighter to light the polish on fire for a few seconds and soften it up. Spit or a spritz of water works for some reason. Do it regularily and keep your shoes clean and dry. Don’t waste too much time on cheap shoes.

Definately spit and polish. Using a soft rag, polish in small circles until the polish becomes dry and the gob on the shoe. Hours of fun.

Ok. Spit and polish has been my thing: soft rag, round and round and round, brush.
Just looking for smarter ways to work.

The cheapest polish is the best, in my experience. Use a slightly dampened piece of a makeup remover pad in light, circular motions to build up a mirror shine in between waving a lighter flame over it.

That’s right, it was cheap. We lit the bottom of the tin until the surface caught alight and began to melt then used a soft cotton cloth to mash it into every available pore on the leather via smal busy circles.

Polishing frequently is the obvious answer, failing that it’s a lengthy repair to get them back up to par.

Spray lacquer?

tooth paste works wonders.

I just mention to my wife that my shoes are looking a little drab. I LOVE Taiwan.

Depends how shiny you want them. If you just want clean with a little shine then brush or rag on some polish , brush it off and then buff with a soft cloth.
If you want them looking like glass then you need to build up the polish by spit shining. Some old silk panties work best for this.

Personally I own two pairs of good leather shoes. About once a year they get treated to a trip to Vietnam where I can get them poliched every day for US$1 and they last pretty much until the next time I go. Its not the cheapest method but you get to spend time in Vietnam which is always good.

I found a guy in Chiayi of all places who did a wicked shine.

For a little pick me up shine just use a little mink oil.

If you polish your shoes really well on Sunday, you can just buff them up before you head out each day.

Vaseline is your move for sure

I do the same thing with a trip to Bangkok. Sit back and have a few beers while getting my shoes done. Not a bad way to go.

Right. I’ve heard of those bars before but I’ve never heard of the act being described as “getting my shoes shined.”

Yeah…and I remember this restaraunt in Vientiane, go up to the 2nd floor, order dinner, things got polished and you didn’t even have to move from the table…ahh the memories… :smiling_imp:
