Betel-Nut Beauties

so that’s what they’re called in english!!! haha

I’ve done just that. I actually made the page a while ago but never uploaded it. There was an article about betel nut girls in today’s Taipei Times which reminded me to get around to finishing the web page. If anybody has any other links or photos to add just send me a pm.

Thanks, wix.

I have been in Hsinchu a few times and passed by that Betel Nut stand. It blows away anything in the Taipei area. Very nice looking ladies (not that I condone having women’s bodies objectified and put on display in a window, my God, no).

I just think it’s funny how the ‘lao ban’ discusses business strategy, as if he’s a business consultant: Wu has been running betel nut stands for more than 10 years… “I knew that the girls would be the key to my business, so I treat them very well,” he said.

Ingenious.
His profit is NT$100K per month?!
Any one want to help me open a betel nut stand?! Where can we get the girls?

What seems interesting to me about all this is that the photos are taken by local photographers. While we are all interested in this, the Taiwanese seem much more interested, as if it represents some local cultural type.

Great subject. I had actually thought about doing a post grad degree based in large part on researching betel nut culture in Taiwan. I started out with the historical links but simply couldn’t avoid the nut girls.

Wix, if you see this, do they have nut girls in booths across the waters in Fujian?

Here’s some mad art I wanted to incorporate. For me at least, this says it all on betel nut. There’s more of it here on a local university webzine.

This would make a great dissertation topic, as I believe that this is one thing that could be called distinctly “Taiwanese” culture. With the government trying to show Taiwan and Taiwanese culture as a separate entity from China, this could be a good start … unfortunately, I think even the inept “powers-that-be” here realize that holding this out as “true Taiwanese culture” wouldn’t bring them much international prestige or “face” … hehe

Finally checked your site Wix. Good job. I just did some searching though, and I think you missed this page, with a few photos you don’t have:

And there’s some more pictures at this site:

(pretty raunchy ones actually) but I can’t get into it.

Nobody chews betel nut on the other side of the strait, or at least in Fujian. Even more sadly there are no betel nut beauties here. The other places I have seen betel nut are Indonesia and India.

Sir Donald, I added a link to this site.

The site at mycen.com.my/inbox/betelnut.html appears to be inaccessible.

Yup, life would be so dull without a hobby.

An article about the topic.

It is not something you usually see around Taipei nowadays.

Yea it makes sense that it would die out as girls basically dress comparably skimpily in normal life nowadays.

I never seen any young ones. Only older ladies.

The purple hairs trafficking in nuts?

About 11, Sir.

Idk what you mean. Do you see them? The young betel nut girls?

This is the only place I’ve seen them in Taipei. I used to live nearby. 3 shops right next to each other.
