Beware of world gym

I signed up for a 2 year contract in March 2012 for World Gym. Recently I was diagnosed with colon cancer. My doctor said that I cannot exercise for a very long time if ever, and definitely not with weights. After many phone calls and faxes, I was told that they will not let me out of the contract because THEY think I can use it later. I need to pay a large cancellation fee and forego my deposit if insist that my cancer and surgery wounds prevent me from exercise. Obviously they have much more medical expertise than my surgeon/oncologist. The people running world gym are simply atrocious. Stay away at all costs.

Well, first, best wishes for a successful treatment and a quick recovery.

We all know World Gym is crap. They can get away with being crap because they are pretty much the only gym in Taiwan. How they got into that position is a mystery to me, but I suspect a combination of red envelopes (on the part of World Gym) and utter incompetence (on the part of competitors) are the main factors.

I’m just waiting for Forumosa Fitness to establish a new chain/franchise

Tim Feriss author of 4 hour workweek tried to start a gym in Taiwan in the 90’s. He was forced out by gangs.

Is that right, now? Doesn’t surprise me in the least.

Stay positive and whilst World Gym are assholes focus on the important stuff. Before coming to Taiwan I worked in a hospital with the largest private oncology centre In the world. If you have any questions or anything , no matter how small, feel free to ask me. If I don’t know the answer I will be able to get the answer. Take care of yourself.

Are you sure about that? He was born in 1977, so he must have been pretty young when he tried that in the 1990s.

Thank you, sir! We’re working hard on it. The problem is it’s very hard to maintain the quality as you expand and I’m currently working hard to make sure we have the kind of trainers necessary to make that happen. It’s a slow process but it will happen eventually. :sunglasses:

To the OP, prayers for a speedy recovery.

I had a friend who needed to cancel their membership for quite serious reasons and like you say World Gym didn’t hint at being sympathetic. So my friend just cancelled the credit card she was paying them through. A hassle, but less so than paying the cancellation fee. Hope all goes well bwages

Have you thought about reporting this to the Consumers’ Foundation or Consumer Protection Agency? Sounds like you were really tugged around and would have a very good complaint. Hate to have this kind of news how they dicked you around in the papers, you know.

If you sign a direct debit you are still liable, even if you cancel your card and close your account. Well, in England its true.

bwages… you can sell your membership to another person, no?

The credit card my friend was using was from a foreign bank, so perhaps that’s why nothing happened. Also, sometime later she rejoined another World Gym (no other option where she moved to) and they said nothing. shrug

I had some issue with a phishing scam 2 years ago and dumbly agreed to a direct debit. HSBC said I was locked in for 2 years, even if I closed my account. I emailed the company at the root of the scam and said I would find the director, remove his genitals and feed them to him. I had a full apology and was refunded, twice!

Maybe World Gym are so big and slow that killing your card is more than they can be faffed dealing with. Sounds likely.
