Birds of Taiwan

I was enjoying a beer with a mate by the river earlier and he said look at that hummingbird diving into water. It was actually a tiny little kingfisher. Lovely little thing.

They’re gorgeous. I’ve risked a couple of rear-ender bicycle accidents by stopping too suddenly to look at one perched by the riverside.

For some reason until I came to Taiwan I always thought of kingfishers as bigger birds, more crow-like in size. I had no idea that they were so small. I guess from the name I expected something that was going to catch bigger fish.

This one was about a third, or maybe a half, the size of kingfishers in the UK.

Oh, so maybe I wasn’t totally off! I believe I’ve only seen them here and in India.
