Just wanted to update this thread. Yes my girlfriend is Taiwanese.
We sat down and talked about this last night and we both decided that a nice meal out and a movie will suffice. She has insisted that she doesn’t want a gift so my plan is just to get her a nice card.
The dinner and the movie may work out more expensive than a gift for $1000NT but it makes it easier for me as she has said that she wants to choose both what we eat and what we watch. I’m fine by that.

I got my girlfriend a Petzl headlamp for her birthday and a backpack for Christmas. I’m not wasting my money on useless crap for her.
BUT a nice dinner and a date is pretty much a given and that’s going to cost at least 1000NT.
