Just curious if you have some weird or funny stories while teaching English in Taiwan.
My personal favourite one that happened to me was this: I had a student who instead of taking his online test, proceeded to fall asleep in the back row for over an hour. Turns out he accidentally sent his test through, checking it as “finished and complete”. At the end of class, he came up hoping I wouldn’t fail him because it was all “an accident.” Classic.
Would love to hear your stories if you’ve got good ones…
I only ever taught in a school for a week or so to help a friend who had a crisis . Quite liked it , apart from the insistence on US pronunciation …I was caught out with zeeeebra , as opposed to the correct zebra . I made the fatal error of having too much fun in the classroom to the horror of the assistant Ended up with parents waiting for the class whilst I was demonstrating my ability to remove my thumb They were so intrigued that they kept asking for a repeat performance. I fear I am not destined to be a teacher of children
Years ago, I had a brilliant 13yo boy in my class who right after I wrote the word CIVILISED on the blackboard and pronounced it three times he quickly shouted the Cantonese expression (see fut lai see/losing control of one’s bowels/defecation) that was phonetically similar to the word. I praised this genius boy with a trademark! He is the only one in my over 20 years of ESL teaching experience who was able to cognitively inspire me like this. His linguistic response is the best that I’ve heard so far.
