This thread is to talk about board games, find players, etc. It comes from a discussion from which I quote the last two comments.
Maybe keep it public as long as we don´t share private info, in case we gather someone else´s attention.
I own a copy of Ricochet Robots… in Spain. I like it but it has the problem of balance between players. A player who finds solutions much faster than others can completely nullify those not so good players, leading to frustration and the feel that you are not really playing.
I have tokens inside the 6 Nimmt box to play No thanks. Great little game.
Hive is great. If you like Chess and the like, you´ll probably enjoy it.
Le Havre is a heavy game. It just happens that I played it yesterday after a long time. My copy is in Spanish. It is not a dealbreaker because most cards are language independent and the others have little text. Moreover, everything is public so one player can translate whatever needs to be translated. Anyway, it adds a bit of fiddliness to a game that already has a fair amount of it.
I can´t play games like Tichu, Mü and Mus because one of the group doesn’t like this kind of card games. And we are usually 3 and these games are either 4-player exclusive or best with 4. A pity.
As a game designer hobbyist, I think all games can be modified to be made more fun for mixed levels and experience. Either simplified or handicapped. Sometimes it’s as easy as letting new players have some “undos”, giving them a head start, or having them play on a team of 2.
(For Ricochet Robots, that means that the first player to find it says the number, then the second player on the team also needs to find it.)
I know modifying rules horrifies some “purists”, but I think it is fine.
Conquest of the Empire (2005) is based on Struggle of Empires (2004), which I own a copy. SoE is a better game, if only because it doesn’t need a table the size of a Taiwanese apartment.
I only do it in some very specific circumstances. Usually I’m very skeptical about house ruling.
I think that’s a whole different game. The 2005 edition had two sets of rules, one based in the original and the other in SoE. I would play the old one, but not many of these old games can compete with more modern ones. More often than not they are too long for what they offer. Still a nice game to have, I’m happy you kept it with you.
A game designer hobbyist here as well, though I admit I skew toward simpler gamers. Love house rules and creative modifications that can help mitigate a weak point(s) in a game.
Recently purchased a couple sets of Dice Throne. Root is coming in soon. To really showcase how casual of a board game enthusiast I am…I actually enjoy casual party games like Munchkin and Exploding Kittens (well, I guess these are actually card games)
Open to heavier stuff though. I have pretty much exclusively just played these with visiting friends and family, though want to branch out and try to get plugged into a group here in Taipei.
I would watch a game of Root, but probably would not play. Because it is fun, but I don’t want to ruin it when I say after 90 minutes, “i think I’m done”. {Smirk}
