Bought HTC on Friday. Lost 25k today

Have almost no experience with stock. But saw that HTC was low and it always bounces back in the past so bought in on Friday. And now today (monday) it dropped 25,000nt. Advice? :frowning:

Only paper loss unless you sold it today. Hang onto the stock and watch it climb back (or lose the rest of your money) .

There are no casinos in Taiwan cause there’s the stock market. All bets are off.
Seriously, there’s has been a huge dip this Friday worldwide (biggest drop this year so far).

I think you should just wait it out.

I regret until today I did not invested when the rumors of taking over Dopod occurred years ago.
Now, I would not put any dime into them. (you are aware about their forecast vs. the Korean bulldozers I hope?)

Their success came solely from gaining knowledge of Dopod’s revolutionary 818 & 838 models which HTC cosmetically improved.

Welcome to the club, South America got my 25K - no sign of return yet :stuck_out_tongue:

Welcome to the "Bought on . Lost on " club.

You could have bought Acer shares because they were rated low compared to form, ouch :noway: . At least HTC makes good products!

Just stick with the stock for the moment, it’s highly likely it’ll bounce back up into 400s quickly.

I suppose it’s all relative, but 350,000NTD is quite a hefty investment for someone with almost no experience with stock. I hope that it’s no more than 5% of your total worth.

On the plus side, I fully expect HTC shares to increase over the next few months and am considering buying in next week (if my similarly amateur opinion counts for anything  ). I have a feeling that Asian shares are going to continue to fall for the rest of this week.

I threw a wad into the market last Friday and another wad into it today. I’m a few 10k’s poorer than I was last Thursday, but what the hell! There’s nowhere safe to park money now, and it’s just going to dwindle away if you park it in the bank, so might as well chance one’s luck and add a bit more spice to each day as you follow the fortunes of the companies you’ve invested in.

Did you forget to add a zero? Because it’s more than 50% my total worth.

Ouch.

Isn’t Rule #1: Don’t put all your eggs in one basket?

Well…I’m a rebel. And…umm…stupid.

I’ve had it suggested to sell HTC tomorrow…take the loss…wait for it to spiral further down…then buy it back. That way it needs to bounce back less to break even. Do you think this downward trend will hold steady for the next few days? Or will the bounce back be sooner than that (if there will be one)?

Does anyone has idea who gains when everyone looses money in the market? Somebody got to be on the other side of spectrum.

I’d be consulting Consumer Electronics websites in the next 4 days. Computex won’t bring anything astonishing for HTC as no attendance - no news.
HTC is camping with lesser good reviews of their recent models - which is a first sign of lesser happy shareholders.
Hiring of staff is at low level (some divisions put on hold new hires I was told)

Question is - how low can it go before it bounces - and what will be the trigger point? A crystal ball might help…

There are investors who short stocks. Most of the money is made by insiders and the hedge funds. Foreign hedge funds tend to invest in the stock market here, pump it, then dump it. Wait for things to settle down, wash and repeat. At least that’s the feeling I get.

What’s more important though is investing in a company with good innovative products on an upward trajectory. I regret investing in Acer instead of Asus. Asus are clearly trying new things, but Acer are constantly contradicting themselves and still seem to be just going for market share. The difference is reflected in their stock performance. Acer should be okay now though simply because of the low stock value, wide range of products and second half of the year should see more laptops sold, still a clunker of a stock to get stuck with with no real growth potential.

For HTC, they certainly have steadied the ship with the one series, but the competitive space is tough. What’s more , the smartphone market is maturing with multiple lower tier operators about to come to the party with ‘good enough androids’, that’s going to kill margins. At least that’s what I feel. At the same time HTC could be justified at 500 or 600 or 700 no problem if they continue putting out nice and popular phones, but I don’t see them going back over 1000, maybe ever.

Yes, we know. And we are all feeling the pain.

Why don’t you pull half your money out tomorrow and take the loss on it as a lesson. If you really have faith in the company, you will still have 25% of your wealth invested. With the other 75% you can invest a little wiser like Tomthorne said - no more than 5% in one basket.

In the current environment, the drops in share values are not necessarily due to individual company performance. It’s a good buying environment though. Just don’t spend all your money at once and don’t spend it all on one thing.

Windows 8 is imminent and that’s going to diminish the Android market, and HTC stock.

Really? I think they are two different spaces. I don’t see Microsoft doing big sales in smartphone anytime soon. The main problem for HTC is the iPhone, Samsung phones and now cheap Chinese , Taiwanese and Korean androids. It’s getting more crowded and margins are dropping, it seems to happen this way for all electronic segments.
The whole market is still growing but the competition is growing faster.

No one would put money on MS due to W8. HTC will jump ship , coming out as well with W8 devices.
Maybe a rumor they look at some acquisition ( and NOT globally copied headphones this time) might be leverage.
Dunno how their cash- flow is though…
