Bringing Web Wednesday to Taipei - Digitari Unite!

Hi sushilover2005, welcome to Forumosa.com!

Yes this is a social mixer tech thingy and it will be nice to meet you next Friday.

I’ve also PM’d some others that expressed interest so we’ll see who else will be available to show up.

I’ll definitely try and attend - should be a great start!

Right, I’ll be there and I’ll bring some friends

Cool man that sounds great. Will be nice to meet others from the tech industry. If we can get at least 5 or 6 people there in total it will be a good start.

More info to come later this week!

You’re not hoping for any more people than that to turn up?
Damn… I guess I better promote you a bit better then

Well it would be great if more came but 5 is the magic number for my expectations.

So I just checked the Brass Monkey site to see if there are any big events that night. Only the 7:00pm Australian Rules Football match between Freemantle and Collingwood will be going on…not sure if that’s going to be a big draw for them but I think there will be plenty of room for us to meet and mingle.

Saturday night looks pretty big with the Tri-Nations Rugby match between South Africa and Australia will be pretty big though. Hell I’ve got friends that are coming up from Taichung just to watch that one.

Anyway, what were we talking about? Oh yeah, Friday at 7:30pm for our technology folk meetup. Was thinking of getting a red balloon or something but then I realized it’s not a children’s birthday party.

So I’ll just bring a random license plate from my collection and put it on a table so it’s visible to see.

As a newb to Taipei (and for anyone else that may be coming) can you give some MRT based directions please?

The Brassmonkeytaipei.com website appears to be the right place, but there details uses the old names for things (i.e. Nanking instead of Nanjing etc.) of course I can figure it out, but would be good if anyone already knows the right exits and stuff.

Cheers,

Alex

The closest MRT station is Nanjing East Road on the brown line.
You can check this Google map page it should give you a good idea of how to get there.
Get out of the MRT station, there’s only one exit, but you don’t want to out through the first entrance, you sort of want to turn back on yourself and then cross the main road, (there’s a CHB bank on the side of the road you want to be one once you’ve crossed). As soon as you’ve crossed the road, take a right and walk past two 7-11’s and you’re there. The pointer on the map is of the building, not the entrance of the brass monkey.

Good map man!

The Brass Monkey is just after the 2nd 7-11.

So what happened to everyone that said they were going to turn up?
In the end I think we got the head count up to 9?
Hopefully more people will be turning up next time as we’re going to try to hold it on a weekday night which might suit more people, or?
Oh, and it was nice meeting you that did turn up

I thought it was a great start for getting the conversation going and nice to meet all of y’all.

For those that weren’t there, we talked about rolling it together with the Taiwan Tech Club (if that’s their name) meetings - next one probably next week. We can see how that goes in the interim and grow from there - get a regular set day and maybe location - maximising new attendees etc.

Alex

I just noticed this thread. Will there be another meeting and where/when? I’m a… technical writer.

Hope to see you all soon!

Thursday night at the Tavern from 19.00 (7pm) and onwards, although it should be a slightly bigger group of people this time around

I’ll be there on Thursday. It’s nice to meet people in the industry and this is the first I’ve ever heard of a social/networking group for those in the tech field.

It seems Taiwan has quite a few different sectors represented: computer parts vendors, networking vendors, software, website specialists, etc. Interesting to see what others are doing for sure.

I just found the thread and guess I missed your last gathering. Will it be a regular meeting now? It would be great to join if the next one comes up. :sunglasses:

At the moment we’ve tagged along with the Taipei Tech Club meetings, but I still believe there is some benefit to be gained from making this a regular event, with a set time and place say on the last Tuesday of every month or something… Then people can know it’s there and plan around it… It also means that once it starts to become known, visitors to Taipei can also know about it…

Also once there is some kind of regularity to it, then we can start to develop it into something that has a guest speaker or something first, followed by the networking/casual drinks after, in the same vein as Web Wednesday events…

Just my thoughts anyway, it would be good for others to weigh in.

Alex

Well, in all fairness, I think we’re going to have to limit this to Friday nights, since you guys left early, you missed out last time…
After five rounds of Jäger, not counting everything else people had, a lot of people didn’t have a very good Friday at work…
I think the so called Taipei Tech Club meetings will be happening once a month now, but it’s a bit hard to plan everything at the moment, although there was word about setting up a website for it on Thursday and that way it might be easier to plan things.
I’ll have a chat with the guys that arrange it and we’ll see if we can’t get a bit more organised.

I’ll try to go to the next event also, if I am available and in Taiwan… I cannot take the beer otherwise I don’t drive back home, but still it is interesting to go get some meet ups with tech people (god, I am tired to meeting up with english teachers…)

did anything come of this ? or did it die a death ?

We’ll kick it off soon again, it’s just that people have been away and Chinese New Year is coming, so more people might be going away again…
I’ll chase up the other organizers and see if we can’t pull one off before Chinese New Year if there’s enough interest.
