This happened last Monday.
Policy representatives from Mediatek and Qualcomm were there, along with Rupert Hammond, head of the U.S.-Taiwan Business Council, and some Brookings experts.
ASML rep was supposed to be there, but couldn’t make it.
Some highlights:
- Hammond spoke like he was English. Must be a naturalized American.
- Hammond said that TSMC and Samsung were the only major players in semiconductors, with an apology to Intel.
- Hammond also said that if China were to attack Taiwan, it would be a global economic disaster. Not just semiconductors. There would be a domino effect.
- A young Korean political economist from Princeton asked Matthew Goodman a question about semiconductors, then about Korea joining the CPTPP. He said, whenever he’s in Taiwan talking about the CPTPP, they always ask him about Korea, haha.
