It’s starting to happen now. This enforcement of Chipping is starting to have the result many of us feared i.e. wankers cutting the chips out of their dog’s necks and dumping them. On the news recently according to the in laws who were talking about it. I don’t have the link but if you are good at Chinese then I am sure you can find it. There were some Forumosans a while back worried this might happen. A pity they broadcast this as it might give others ideas 
too
Then a law must be passed that people whos animals are found WITHOUT a chip (that is the chip has been removed) if ever traced will face a year in jail. They should photograph each animal that has been chipped and be databased to the id card of its registered owner.
We need to get serious about our pets.
No one should be allowed to breed pets without a license and those licenses should be costly. NO pets should be allowed to be sold that are not “fixed”.
Draconian laws needed to protect our furry four legged friends.

I am completely baffled by this. Then again, I am from a state (California) with a reputation for being super liberal and open…but almost unanimously voted to ban gay marriage and medicinal marijuana. So I live in upsidedown world, I guess.

When did this law come into effect? And is it only Taipei City or is County included? I’ve been wanting to get my little boy chipped for ages, but have to find a vet I’d trust to do the job. Same reason I haven’t had him neutered.
Not long ago and I believe it is Taipei city only. In addition some dogs over a certain size and type must have mandatory third party insurance and be muzlled and leashed in public parks. Taipei county does not require this the muzzle law yet.
Thanks for the info fenlander. Even if Taipei County were to pass a muzzle law, I refuse to muzzle my dog. Chipping though is a really good idea. Anyone know of any reputable vets in Taipei County (Near Sinjhuang) that do chipping?
Yah I agree I hate to have a dog muzzled or even neutered (spelled it right this time lol). I had mine chipped in Yung Ho as I have had bad experiences with vets in Tu Chen. You are right to be cautious about vets in Taiwan as the training is very lax compared to UK at least. There is a vet in Yung Ho by the Yung Ho Soya Bean place. It is on the same side as the Soya Bean place, and if you were looking at the Yung Ho Soya Bean store it would be about one minute to your left. It has been in Taiwan for about 30 years and is in my opinion the best vet in Taipei county. If you need the exact address let me know and I will look it up but you should be able to find it from that. I actually drive all the way from Tu Chen to Yung Ho just for that vet, they are also reasonably prices. I completely recommend them.
Some dog breeds do feel some pain with the chip. That generally depends on your dog’s pain tolerance, mine never felt a thing and didn’t notice but I have seen other dog breeds that yelp a bit.
Once I went there for the medication to prevent heart worm as my dog goes to a lot of wetland places, and he had run out. He knew I lived in Tu Chen so rather than asking me to pop back the next day to pick it up, he actually sent it in the post free of charge. Nice guy and damn good vet!
This vet sound like he is too far for you anyways he is there as a last resort if you can’t find another.
Again, thanks for the info fenlander. Yonghe is a bit of a drive, but not too bad. The biggest concern would be having to listen to my little guy singing his guts out the whole way there. He’s quiet as a mouse until he gets in the car, then it’s like he’s making up for not making any noise! I don’t think the chipping would bother him too much in terms of pain. He’s had plenty of shots before and never cried, plus our cat beats the hell out him on a daily basis 
I think I’ll have to make some time to head on up to the vet though, as him running away if he gets loose is a constant worry. Thanks to his breed, he’s a very stubborn and free-spirited dog.
I had my cat neutered and chipped and she didn’t like it at the beginning but they get over it quickly. It is free of charge to chip it and not mendatory for cats.

Can you give me the link as to where it is mandatory to neuter dogs in Taichung?
I disagree in my opinion Mandatory neutering should not be all over Taiwan. Hobby breeders have the right to breed responsibly without a bureaucratic breeders license, most of the dogs on the streets are mutts or Taiwan tu gou not pedigree imports.
Normal people as well as professional breeders in UK and USA have the right to breed dogs sensibly as so they should be able to in Taiwan.
Does the neutering policy in Taichung mean that the local hill tribes have no right to breed their hog dogs? Working dogs do not in general work well when neutered some people disagree with neutering on health grounds, that is their choice.
If you want to stop irresponsible breeding then go after the massive puppy farms, ban pet shop display windows or dogs being sold in markets. Big brother ordering everyone to neuter dogs is bad news, pity we cant neuter more people instead.

Dogs should be neutered BEFORE puberty. Best time to neuter is around 3-5 months of age. So don’t wait too long.
Why in the hell should there be mandatory " chipping. " I would NOT allow my dogs to be chipped. The only reason for that is to try to find your dog is it is lost. If they chip you, they can track you and your dog.
