BSD User Groups

I’ve been looking to find the BSD User Group(s) that I know exist in Taipei, but so far without success. There are URLs for freebsd.com.tw and openbsd.org.tw, but no information is posted. Does anybody know how to contact the BSD folks? I attended a joint Linux/BSD meeting in Taipei last summer and collected a few namecard, but emails to those people have gone unanswered. Any help will be appreciated.

regards,
Robert

Robert: you can contact the folks at www.elixus.org.

Dear Feiren,

Thank you for the information - I will give that a try. By the way, what about you? Are you into *BSD or Linux? I do both, and would like to meet with fellow-minded geeks. There is a Taipei Linux Users Group, but they haven’t had a meeting for about six months. The BSD group used to have regular meetings - I attended once (actually a joint meeting with the TLUG) and the BSD people were especially knowledgeable, especially about networking (which greatly interests me). Feel free to contact me directly if you like: y2kbug at ms25.hinet dot net

Robert

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I too am interested in either attending or resuscitating either BSD or Linux User Group meetings. I checked out www.elixus.org, but didn’t find any info.

I am a network trainer and consultant, working in design, deployment, configuration, and training of small to large-scale ISP backbones, even taught a couple classes on Juniper routers for senior engineers from Chunghwa Telecom. In my spare time, I mess around with various distributions of Linux and BSD, and am looking for a place to learn new things and share some info.

Sorry folks, I accidentally clicked on the wrong button and posted my reply to the above message before I actually wrote anything.

But I did have something to write, so here it is…

You’re right, Horace, not much in for on elixus.org, but you can communicate with some of the people on IRC if you’re into that. Personally, I hate IRC, but it seems to be real big with the Taiwanese.

I’d be interested in meeting with you sometime and with others with a BSD/Linux interest. I mentioned the possibility of organizing a foreigner’s LUG, and had a good response on this forum. I was thinking of doing that this month.

Unfortunately, I have suddenly gotten seriously ill. Kidney stones - this really sucks. I can’t do much, staying at home, drinking tons of water, seeing a doctor. Really messed up my plans for July at least. So maybe an August meeting in Taipei can be arranged. If I can do it, I’ll post an announcement here on Forumosa and see how many people bite.

If you like, feel free to contact me by email y2kbug@ms25.hinet.net

Yeah, I thought you may be out of commission for a while, with taking over Distrowatch for a while and the kidney stones. By the way, I liked the review on OpenBSD 3.5.

Well, if and when you’re feeling up to it Robert, I’m still up for it, even though I’m a complete *nix newbie.

Hope you get better sooner too man!

Let’s do it. I lost interest in TLUG because:

(1) we could never find a decent place to meet
(2) there was such a range of skill level it made it hard to do anything (I think this would work better in a small group)
(3) The crowds were too big and all Chinese speaking. Now I have no problem with speaking Chinese, but it kind of ruined it for non-Chinese speaking foreigners.

Heh, just to reassure, I might be a total *nix newbie but I’m at least familiar with working in a CLI, having grown up using DOS, so hopefully I won’t be slowing y’all down too much or for too long
