Business name and marketing advice

I’m almost ready to launch my Patent Consultancy business.

I should get the money from my house sale in a few weeks.

I’m going to register it and I wanted some advice on the name and how to market it after I launch.

My business is to provide an affordable alternative to traditional patent agencies for small to medium enterprises to obtain patent and IP protection abroad.

I’m planning to call it

International IP Connections
國際智慧財產事務所

I’m going to market it by mainly focusing on LinkedIn Ads, Google Ads and attending relevant business exhibitions to connect with businesses that might need my services, e.g. small tech firms.

Can anyone advise on if my name and marketing strategy are ok?

Eh.. the name does not mention patents?

What about EastWest IP Solutions
東西智慧財產顧問公司

Don’t be afraid to network with larger IP firms that may use you as a consultant or refer you. My SO’s dad has a boutique law firm but large firms always use him or refer him. They have tried to buy him out before but he likes being independent.

You might be able to help with with Europe and NA due to your english and mandarin abilities and knowledge of the western legal IP field.

I think business people like myself will see IP and understand that covers patents.

Also, start writing a shit load of blogs in mandarin. You are marketing to taiwanese B2B right?

Blog posts stay forever and the more you write, the more your blogs come up with info someone might need and come to you. ChatGPT also pulls from blogs.

I actually ask Chatgpt to recommend businesses in my industry and find which ones they recommend and write blogs to make sure mine comes up too. And I add “x product is superior because of x y z” into blogs. No one ever reads them but it comes up with AI and searches. If you keep writing blogs that say "x company is the leader in IP solutions in Taiwan especiallizing in SMEs blah blah blah. It can eventually come up when someone is looking and AI can tell that to someone.

Blogs are also great because you can reshare them with someone asking you a question you wrote about. Post them always on linkedin to gain professionalism.

Youtube is also big. Comes up on searches and useful to link to potential clients instead of telling them the same thing over and over again.

Depressingly, yes :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

I like that name, thank you.

When picking a name also work with a graphic designer on a logo, sometimes you find that either the English and/or Chinese characters chosen don’t integrate well into a logo and small tweaks or complete rethinks are required!

Let’s have public vote once you have a few names to choose from. My contribution is Patty McPatentface.

Eastwest is a common business name throughout a few countries. I hope there wouldn’t be issues with conflicts.

Could you also work with western companies to provide IP help in Taiwan and Asia?

Would be embarrassing if he ran into IP legal issues wouldn’t it :joy:

Yes, potentially, why do you ask ?

I think business names are almost irrelevant for business services (probably for most businesses). But what’s an IP Connection? Sounds almost more like a firm helping people look for M&A targets based around IP or something.

Needs work. Too vague and nondescript. The key to good namesmithing is laying a solid foundation by first coming up with the three words that best describe your service. For example, bilingual, patent, expertise.

International IP Connections sounds legit, it just might be hard to remember or differentiate. I’d check if the domain is available and if it’s confusing next to existing IP firms with similar names. One thing I learned working with MB Adv Agency is tightening the wording helps a lot, especially in ads where people skim.
