Buy 1—Get 1 Free: Please help me understand the logic

Buy 1 get 1 free steak…

So here’s the deal: There was only one on the shelf. I asked an employee if there were more. He went and got someone who knew.

•Me: This is 買一送一 but there’s only one here. Do you have any more?
•She: Sorry no, only this one.
•Me: Well, in that case, can I get this one that’s left at half price or at a discount?
•She: No.
•Me: Really? So I need to pay full price for just the one?
•She: Yes.
•Me: (incredulously) Really?!

This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced this. One time a particular bar soap was updated, so the store was getting rid of the old stock with a 買一送一 deal. Same situation—only one left but they insisted I needed to pay full price.

In both of these cases I walked away. I’m just trying to understand the rationale, especially on the steak which is perishable.

Similar has happened to me before and they stamped the receipt and I went back and collected the second item at a later date. Perhaps it was time limited in your case.

This is what I have done on multiple occasions. Normally in carrefor or wellcome.

I wasnt buying something perishable though.

I’ve had it with coffee many times, never steak. Of course, the problem the staff have is when they scan the barcode there won’t be any override option. It might be because it was perishable, the offer was very short term before they had more steaks delivered, or @Steve4nLanguage got unlucky with the member of staff he spoke to.

Yup! This is Taiwanese logic for you. I was faced with a similar situation before at PX Mart for some Chicken breast or thighs…only 1 box was left with a 買一送一 sticker on it. Asked the 店員 where’s the other box? She said “如果沒有架上就沒了 (If it’s not on the shelf, then it’s all sold out!)”. I asked "Why are you guys not putting these out in pairs if they’re on “買一送一”…she replied “Some customers choose to only take 1 box, as they can’t finish it and will go to waste”. I asked if I can get for half price, she said can’t as the POS system doesn’t allow her to change the price.

Not sure I understand the problem. It says but 1 get 1 free, not 50% off. These are NOT the same. Can’t use this deal without another item, regardless of reason. Doubt someone put the sticker on there when only one was remaining.

Most likely the stickers all went on at the same time.

I realize from this thread that I am too passive a consumer. When I encounter this - which has happened a fair number of times over the years - I’ve shrugged and thought “Oh well, not buying that then.” It’s never even occurred to me to ask about it!

How that conversation should have gone.

•She: No.
•Me: walks out without paying

There’s a reason why they’re an employee at the grocery sometimes.

I have to get on mine about this kind of nonsense sometimes because they can’t sell thinking outside the box.

I will literally demonstrate and ask them all watch me or listen to my conversations with a client and they’ll be like yeah that was great! I learned so much! and then never take anything from it :person_facepalming:t2:

They seem scared too make a mistake even though I told them I can accept them making mistakes trying to make it work rather than not find any solutions.

Didn’t know you could do this.

It’s good you took the time to train your staff. Knowledge retention is through repetition and then getting them to do it multiple times over a given period, the retention drops off dramatically from the first day or so so you have to repeat over a period of months probably. I know sales people who were still learning close to their retirement. Some catch it quickly but everybody can improve by undergoing repeated training and practice.

This graph should go into months…and should explain that for really learning something they should be asked to practice it not review it.

I had no idea that was possible. But you’d think that when I asked about it, they would have offered that to me. But no, just the “Can’t do that” and that’s it.

The problem is that I would have given the store 240NT for two steaks as advertised. But in this case, I would have gotten half the amount for the same price, which I’m not doing. By not honoring their own deal with a least a discount, I’m not buying–and I’m assuming no one else will–so the store is choosing to make 0NT on this.

It could also be: Middle managers make a rule. It’s fixed in the barcode. Employees have to follow.

Inflexible idiots are at many levels in big companies.

I do this, if I want something and it’s 2 for 1 but the second one will go to waste, I just take the one (example an ice cream but I’m not heading home). I don’t change to another product, I just pay the price I was going to pay anyway for the product I want.

And the fact they don’t trust staff enough to allow them to override the price, just because the managers are on the take, they think the staff are too

Agree with you! But then it is the store’s duty to take that last “buy 1 get 1 free” item off the shelf immediately so as not to cause confusion & re-label said item with a discounted price since the item is almost past its expiry date & their intention is to sell it off asap. But as usual, the employees would not “主動的” go and tell the “店長” about this because this is “不是我的問題”

I’m guessing simple answer is cashier was not authorized to make a decision or was not able to input the correct info into the register.

The thing is, it wasn’t the cashier. I was in the meat section and asked an employee who in turn went to get another employee who knew about the situation and could help me.

I once ordered 買一送一 drinks from a drink shop through Uber Eats. I bought four drinks for the price of two drinks. I ended up getting just one drink delivered. They ran out of ingredients, supposedly. I was charged full price for the one drink.
