Buying books from China

Does anyone know of any bookstores in Taipei that specialize in getting books from mainland China that are not usually available in Taiwan? I recall hearing about bookstores like this, but am not sure where to look … and I don’t really feel like flying all the way over to China just to get one book.

Scroll down to “PRC Publications” on this slightly old list of Taipei bookstores.

There is a Mainland China Bookstore that doesn’t seem to be mentioned in Cranky’s list in a lane going off Hsinsheng Sth Road just opposite of the main entrance of Taida. They have something significant like 大陸書店 or so as a window sign. I believe I’ve seen another one around that area, too, but don’t exactly remember where.

Are any of these places willing to order books if they don’t have them in stock? The book I’m looking for is:

張在舟 著《 曖昧的歷程﹕中國同性戀史》 (鄭州市﹕中州古籍出版社﹐2001)

I’m not sure that this would be a book they have in stock. If worse comes to worse I could borrow it from a friend, although that would take a long time. If I have to do that, where is the best place (preferrably close to Taida) to have an entire book copied?

Yes, I know DaiLu(

I need a copy of Xinhua Pinxie Cidian. The bookstore in Banqiao that specializes in mainland books doesn’t have it. (Or maybe the store does have it, but it just can’t be found in all that disarray :s .)

I’ve heard that near Taipei 101 there’s a big store for mainland books. Does anyone have details? Other suggestions welcome.

There is one in the basement of Kmall, it’s part of the the same chain near taida. The best one is near Taidian (taiwan power) not too far from NTU. That’s not the kind of thing locals think of when we go to a mainland dictionary. I don’t think they’ll carry that. I have seen it in a few local bookstores.

I don’t know about the shipping to Taiwan, but here in the States I’ve ordered books from http://www.dangdang.com using a credit card. They arrived slowly (sea mail) but in very good condition. I got the new “Comprehensive C>E dictionary” from Dalian Ligong Daxue this way – three volumes of just about anything you could ever want. Even better than the Shanghai Jiaotong aka Jianhong (who ripped it off from them.) Or maybe a Taiwanese publisher will rip off this one too, given the right encouragement??

Many thanks, taipeiapple01 and ironlady. The Banqiao store managed to locate its copy, so I was able to buy the Xinhua Pinxie Cidian (which looks quite good, but not as good as Yin Binyong’s other work on orthography).

Let’s keep this thread going, especially if people can come up with addresses and phone numbers. And the dangdang site will doubtless come in handy.

Sounds like you’ve already found Shenghuan. FYI they also have a Shida branch. Shenghuan is the mother lode.

I live in Banqiao but have never been there … I should go check it out … although by doing so, that means I’ll end up coming home with way more books than I could possibly read … :s

I live in Shanghai and go to Taiwan once in a while. If you really can’t find something I can buy it here. I’ll just charge a beer.

Yes, there is one in one of the lanes off Roosevelt Road either side of the Taipower Building (Taidian Dalou) (not the MRT station - tha actual building). I’ve forgotten which side of the building it is. They can order stuff for you and their prices are very reasonable.
