Can someone explain to me why my Post Office debit card (with a Visa symbol) and Costco Visa are worthless at Family Mart, but I can use LINE pay without problems?
It seems like a lot of major stores in Taiwan are oddly specific about which methods of payment they will take. Any recommendations on a card that can be used (almost) anywhere? I really hate cash…
You’re going to have to get used to it or look into signing up for multiple cards.
There’s one way to use plastic at (every) convenient store. Get a credit card that’s also an Easy Card. Every major convenient store chain is accepting Easy Card pay. If your credit card is also your Easy Card, you do not have to handle any cash since the card will replenish itself once it hits a certain amount.
You mean Costco Visa by Cathay United Bank? That is weird. It is a standard credit card. Family Mart is supposed to take any and all credit cards. I just used it to pay ridiculous amounts at the organic store, like 200ntd, so it is not a matter of amount.
The postal office card can be used online and some mortar and brick stores. But ecommerce is fine.
I like this idea quite a lot. Then I can drop the YoYo card from my wallet as well. Now I just need to cross my fingers and hope I can find someone to approve my application. Maybe I will try Cathay United since that is who issued the Costco card. Thanks!
You are correct. It is the Cathay United Costco Visa. I was pretty surprised they told me no at FM, but it is the first time I tried to use it in a convenience store. The clerk also said they only take cards issued from one specific bank.
As for the post office debit card, I also got it refused at PX mart, so it seems like those are mostly just useful at the ATM (and online as you said).
In the end, I resorted to LINE pay and thought about the downfall of civilization…
Of places that normally accept cards, I think stores that do not have loyalties towards a specific bank (accept almost all credit cards) are one of the places that don’t accept Easy Cards.
