Buying wood in Taipei

Does anyone have recommendations on where to buy structural wood, plywood, or wood planks other than TRPlus? It’s quite overpriced at 特力房, and although I don’t need large quantities or special cuts—maybe 20 pieces of 240x9x4 (cm) every few months (roughly a 100-inch long 2x4 for non-metric readers)—I’m looking for better options.

I checked on Shopee and found some options, but if anyone knows of a local shop where I could check it out and buy locally, that would be awesome.

Here’s one in New Taipei, close to an MRT station give them a call if you can’t google up one near you, No. 184, Section 2, Beixin Rd, Xindian District, New Taipei City, 231 . .

Be prepared to be assaulted with tall tales of Taobao and Canada shortly…

Google 木材行 and go there. They will have structural wood. I don’t know which area you live in.

I live in Neihu. Thanks. Yeah, I did search for it before posting but my problem was that most places seem to only have plywood, or the shop looks so small that it is hard to imagine they stock bigger pieces of boards/planks there.

Are you looking for 2x4? They don’t seem incredibly common here, I’ve seen a few on shopee and the going rate seems to be around 30nt per foot. Though these are for deck planks.

Most those shops won’t keep those in stock because when people buy them, they’re doing an entire deck… Most the shops just keep one board there and will order more if the need comes up.

Most of the structural “2x4” types aren’t 2x4 but much thinner, and often made of those philippine mahogany or even “plywood”. If your aim is to build wall panels, you will need to adjust your size expectation, because 2x4 aren’t routinely used here for this.

Around Zhishan MRT station, on that bridge across the river is a few wood shops that sells structural wood. They may have what you look for.

Not the exact shop but I recall seeing a few wood shop here.

Thanks for the insight. Not specifically 2x4’s but something in that ballpark (I am a metric guy so just used it as a reference). The project I am currently working on requires approx 2.5 m long pieces, and structurally 8-10cm x 3-4cm will do. I’ll look around tomorrow, found some promising shops, and will check out Shilin too!

Thanks for all the replies and recommendations. I visited a few shops today, and although most of them were selling pressed plywood and offering cutting services only, I found a place (and I’m sure there are many more) that sold exactly what I was looking for at a quarter of the price compared to B&Q (特力房). Shilin has a whole street next to Zhishan Station full of construction stores (right next to the location @Taiwan_Luthiers mentioned). I bought 20 pieces of 240cm long structural wood and a few sheets of plywood. Since the next-day delivery was very reasonable too (400 NT to my house in Neihu), I didn’t even have to load and unload it into my car.

Wasn’t exactly looking for 2x4’s just something in that ballpark. For smaller quantities it would be okay, and wouldn’t care too much but you actually can save tens of thousands if you buy relatively bigger quantities elsewhere.
