…as long as they meet the employment qualifications and have no preexisting health issues?
Or are there age limitations to either one?
If it makes any difference he had and ARC and NHI for several years in the past but that was over 10 years ago.
Thanks for any info.
As far as I know there are not currently upper age limitations on professional permits in Taiwan. Certainly there are 60 year olds on the Gold Card.
If you’ve had a job that pays more than $4872 a month you can probably get a gold card. Once you get to Taiwan you can sign up for and pay for your own health insurance. I had a traditional work visa and insurance paid by my employer, quit, left the country, and came back a year later with a gold card and did exactly that. I had to pay a pretty big balance on my health insurance though… I think because it was still active while I was away.
No age limit on visas apart from the minimum age requirements and the maximum age of 30 to 35 for working holiday visas (depending on agreements with separate countries).
There used to be a hard limit on public sector employees (including public school teachers) however, they made it easier for employers to extend their working agreement (provided both parties agree…) Essentially meaning that after 65 once your boss thinks you’re no longer physically and mentally capable you are out.
Also… good luck getting a job after 65 in a public sector job (or any job really.) Employers tend to favor those in their late 50s and cram schools often prefer younger teachers and private schools prefer middle aged.
I’ve known foreign nationals over 65 who have been able to find at least some employment here. That said, not many. And a recent government survey said that ageism was the no 1 form of employment discrimination.
Thanks for all if the helpful replies. It sounds like age is no issue for an ARC then.
I’ll make another post on job possibilities later, but basically he’ll retire in about a year as a principal at an international school in Asia. He’s hoping to get into some smaller or newer international school or private school with minimal hours using his background to help with promotion/consulting, IB programs, accreditation etc… Has good Mandarin skills, past work experience here in teaching as well as in media.
Health and fitness are good.
.
So the other big question is NHI.
No age limits on that for foreigners?
I’d actually be surprised if there aren’t some kind of restrictions.
Or maybe I should ask on the health forum?
Thanks again for all the helpful replies.
None mate.
That’s correct. Currently none. Someday there could well be, so best to get in sooner rather than later.
That’s surprising.
So technically an 80 year old could get an ARC and I guess if in good health, also on NHI?
Wait, what? Is the income requirement for gold card THAT low? That’s sub poverty by magnitudes here
Better move to Kaohsiung with 4,872 USD, easier to live ![]()
Who said USD? This is a Taiwan conversation…a 140k a month income, on the other hand, you can live anywhere and enjoy lots of luxury in this country…

I believe the minimum is NTD 160,000 per month.
