How many days can Taiwan hold out till US and/or/maybe Japanese help arrives? And is it possible that Taiwan could pull a surprise victory?
Do you mean right now? In ten years? In 15? With or without updating military capabilities? Without doing this…I would say not much chance.
I hear a lot of talk of holding off a Chinese victory long enough to wait for aid…not much talk of winning anymore.

How the Chinese going to get here, by swimming.
They haven’t got a Navy that could bring enough manpower here, and you can’t take an island without troops.
LP
That assuming PRC wants to take control of the island. They might be happier nuking the place and apologizing to the world as an after thought.
Our anti ballistic missiles will make short work of the 3rd world nukes the Chinese have.

The same way they took Hainan Island. Or any of the other 100+ islands the ROC controlled in the early 1950s.
Tell it to the residents of Hainan Island.
Quit dreaming. Taiwan has defenses that are second to none and we have the military powers of Japan and the USA looking out for us.
Intersting hypothetical. I hope this thread gets some serious posts. I am curious as to the beliefs on this topic.
I have my own opinions on this but will hold off posting them for a while.
“Second to none”???
Quit smoking dope. Taiwan isn’t worth one American soldier getting his hair mussed.
Let’s hope we will never find out! As STV said, to take an island one needs to land ground troops (know that coming from a land locked country of course) to out number the Taiwan forces by about 3 to 1 at least and that would not be possible. Bomb the Sea and Air ports an option however that would just cause a huge out cry and more anti China and more so anti PRC governement movements within the PRC they certainly do not want to deal with hence my view remains the same as for the last 15 years, an invasion very unlikely ever going to take place.
If they did start firing all those missiles off then it would be best to be at the museum or somewhere they value.
That is assuming they can aim the damn things.
didn’t the liberating chinese forces suffer horrible losses due to nautical conditions? the beach there on the north side of haikou city has a memorial gate to these folks IIRC.
weren’t the japanese stopped there when the hainanese people rose up and (under the promise of autonomy from mainland chinese given by the CCP) fought back?
Taiwan successfully test-fires supersonic anti-ship missile, newspaper says
Taiwan successfully test-fired a new locally developed supersonic anti-ship missile that could reach the coast of rival China, a newspaper reported Friday.
The mass-circulation daily China Times said the Hsiung Feng III has a range of 300 kilometers (187.5 miles), enough to hit China, 160 kilometers (100 miles) across the Taiwan Strait.
The island regularly tests its defenses and considers missiles from China as one of its major security threats.
Taiwan and China split at the end of a bloody civil war in 1949, but Beijing has maintained threats of force against the island. Taiwan estimates that more than 600 short-range missiles are based near China’s coast.
The new missile is believed to outperform a similar weapon in China’s arsenal, the Russian-made Sunburn.
The Hsiung Feng III had been fired from southern Taiwan in the direction of the Pacific more than a month ago in the presence of Defense Minister Lee Jye, the China Times said.
“The number of test-firings was not just once,” the paper quoted an anonymous military source as saying.
Taiwan’s Defense Ministry doesn’t comment on weapon systems or weapons purchases.
The missile has been under development for a decade and failed several early tests, the China Times said. The paper said it wasn’t known whether the successful tests mean the weapon is ready for mass production.
Did you people read this article? It means that Taiwan has superior defenses against the warmongering Chinese. As long as we Taiwanese value peace and progress, we will make better weapons to fight against the 3rd world Chinese horde.
Taiwan will kick China’s ass. That’s the truth. All the pundits fear China. But people fear the unknown. No one knows what China will do, and, hypothetically, China is so huge, that it just seems impossible to repel. But that’s ignorant. Just look at the Iraq War (pt. 2). The US sent in just a team of 6-7 jet fighters at a time -pilots whose experience and skill make the Chinese airforce pilots look like larvae- and even THEY bumped into one another and shot each other. Can you imagine the self-inflicting blunders a Chinese aramada would inflict on eachother? It would be a joke. Many or ‘bigger’ doesn’t always equal better. Taiwan would slaughter them, and if there were even just a ‘bit’ of US or Japanese assistance, we’d be carving China up into a pie -the US gets Tibet, Japan gets Manchuria, Taiwan gets Fujian, Xinjiang is independent -and Tibet too-, Mongolia is independent, and any other province is independent. China will only be great once it is dismantled. Why -after 56 years!!!- haven’t they invaded? Answer: Taiwan, alone- would kick their ass!!!
So why hasn’t ROC taken over the mainland yet…
Is ROC just the epitome of Confucian humbleness or what…all this time it could have carved the mainland like a pig on stick or crushed it like a sugar cane in a nightmarket vendor machine…
But ROC is smart that way, confusing the people on the mainland with our inept politics and dipolar message without firing a shot.
Not that ROC can fire any shots anyways…ROC has sold all their bullets to the USA.
Taiwan does not want China because it is poor. We would be better off as a small wealthy country, than a large poor country with ethnic groups that all hate each other.
China has no right to exisit in its current form. We should give Manchuria to Japan and Corea, Fujian(our Taiwanese brothers) to Taiwan, Tibet, Eastern Turkestan should be independent, Inner Mongolia should be reunited with Mongolia, Hong Kong and Macau should vote on whether to rejoin the UK and Portugal, and China should be divided as a Mandarin China, a Cantonese China, a Shanghainese China, and a Hunanese China, just like Yugoslavia.
Why not turn back the clock the Qing Dynasty or the Yuan Dynasty, when Turkey was part of China?
note that Turkey belonged to Mongolia. Mongolia is its own country and it took over pretty much everything in its path back in the day. Calling them China is about as fallacious as calling China Mongolia. However, this is besides the point.
Without outside assistance, In my opinion China should eventually be able to take over by fighting a war of attrition.
By the way sorry for just popping up in the forum like this. I’m new to posting in forumosa but I have been reading it for awhile.
Inner Mongolia where most of the world’s Mongolians live is its own country? There has been ample evidence of the Sinicization of the Mongolian as there has been Sinicization of people of Taiwan.
Taiwan Independence via military confrontation is pretty much a lost cause.
