Can "THEY" track my IP?

Can people track my IP address if I just post in a forum (like this beautiful one  ) or if I send e-mail? For example, can the Gmail or Yahoo admin or forum admin people home in on my IP just through posts or e-mail?

Simple answer: Yes.

To see for yourself, go here: digitalpoint.com/tools/geovisitors/
You’ll get a nice Google map of where you are. Note that this will locate your ISP (which probably just locates your town), but the ISP can then map that to you.

You mention Yahoo: There was a famous case a couple of months ago when a Chinese journalist (Shi Tao?) was arrested for err ‘leaking state secrets’ by the Chinese government because Yahoo tracked him down for them …

Yes. Though us regular folk can only get so much information, and if you try hard enough you can do a good job covering your tracks.

Hmm. That is food for thought.

I always think that if you don’t do anything wrong, then you don’t have to worry about hiding, but I also believe in privacy. :s

I just checked your IP address - it’s a dynamic one, which means that it changes all the time. I’m sure someone with more tech firepower than me could trace you, but I can’t. So at least you’re safe from Big Brother Forumosa!

It shows my IP address as being in Downey California…

Oops, a problem…
Your browser is not sending the necessary referrer info (maybe Norton is blocking it?), so the map is falling back to data for digitalpoint.com

Oops so now they cant see me anymore… oh well

Yes, “They” can see everything you do. And stop picking your nose.

heh…heh…heh…

All those porn downloads in your past starting to haunt you?

use a proxy server and you’ll be virtually invisible…

Yes, I know it’s dynamic. It makes me feel like less boring.

You were able to check mine because you’re admin, or because there’s some way that any average joe can do it?

Noone else can see it. But it’s not automatic for them to see, some effort and button pressing is needed. And to be blunt, they couldn’t care what your IP is unless you’re abusing it.

Maybe I am. I have created dozens of accounts and this entire thread has been me. MUA HA HA HA HA :smiling_imp:

What is that?
