There was a bit of kiwi fruit too which I ate as my “friend” is on a diet which only allows him to eat things beginning with “T”.
Coleslaw would be nice. (Never thought I’d say that) - but I’m craving for a nice dollop of home-made coleslaw. There’s obviously something wrong with me.
The glass thing, Flicka, you should have asked for the manager. I can’t for the life of me imagine why the staff aren’t checking the glasses before they fill them. I’m sure Bob would take that very seriously. Yesterday I watched him send three baskets of chips back to the kitchen because they weren’t perfect… he does actually give a shit about service, which is why I eat there every Sunday. (And lately - Sandman will roll his eyes I’m sure - I’ve been entertaining myself of a Saturday night watching the mad goings on… dammit my mother told me to never return to the scene of the crime…!)
Just wondering who 'hot pants girl ’ is?? You know who I mean, the short haried woman that wears basically underwear and dances on the bar just like in Bangkok. Not that I’m whining about it, it’s just that last time I went there I was waiting to order a drink and her crotch was almost in my face while she was stretching for ballet or something…
I’m not sure about shards of glass, but I’ll sure as hell make sure I havent got pubes in my Whiskey next time.
BTW, the chips at my place are pretty darn good!
Here’s to freedom of expression anyway!!

In another thread you offered to ‘shout’ me a drink and yet it is apparent that you lack the self-restraint to refrain from making the above thinly-veiled slagging of our establishment. I had been amused to read how your promotional thread turned into a quasi fluff piece for Carnegie’s but professional courtesy and respect for a fellow operator would restrict me from posting my opinions on other establishments in a forum such as this, freedom of expression notwithstanding. As to the offer of a drink; no thanks, I can happily live without your condescension.
Sorry you misunderstood, that was NOT a crack at your establishment at all. In fact, it was thinly disguised humour about a situation I found quite amusing, that is all it was.
Incidentally, if i posted that under the guise of an anonymous customer rather than another venue manager, would I have recieved the same reaction? Bob, I don’t see what was inflammatory about my post!!
Flicka: I take the issue of glass shards very seriously. I should be grateful and interested to know more details about this incident; what time it happened and how exactly it was dealt with. I suspect that the glass shard(s) in question originated not from the glass prior to pouring but from the ice well. Despite being covered, it is not without the bounds of possibility that some may find themselves where they shouldn’t be. I have ordered a much more thorough checking of the ice wells and how they are drained and cleaned.
In the interim, please accept our sincere apologies and I would like to extend an offer of a complimentary brunch for yourself and one friend at a time that is convenient to you. Just PM me first and I will arrange it.
Cheers,
Bob Marshall
General Manager
Carnegie’s Taipei
I was with Flicka. It happened around 2pm. We’d been there since just after noon and everything was fine until that happened. Except for the dried edges around the gouda. (Kitchen staff should wrap that up better)
I would mainly like to know why your staff didn’t think to :
apologize profusely
NOT charge Flicka for his ginger ale after that.
That would have sufficed for me, even though the glass wasn’t in MY drink. I fully understand how this can happen as bar mishaps are quite common.
I would recommend that all foreign bosses of local western type restaurants train their staff to become more proactive about such issues. It is the norm in the west to ‘comp’ patrons when such embarrassments occur. In the US, one could even sue over such an occurance.
Due to your gracious reply to Flicka, I will definately return to and recommend Carnegie’s.
However, I do always wonder, given the array available in Taiwan, why fruit is such a rare commodity on western menus. Or any menus here. A great huge fruit salad would be a nice addition to your brunch fare and go nicely with waffles. Ta!
Alien: I agree entirely with your comments regarding pro-activity on the part of staff. Actually, I was sitting outside last Sunday and they at least should have informed me too of this incident and your suggestions on appropriate action would have been done immediately by myself. As regards the fruit issue (and Hex’s coleslaw fixation), I shall consider it. It may not be a bad idea to have a small supply of fresh fruit available should a fruit salad be requested by a customer. Logistically, the primary issue here is storage and freshness; our storage space is limited as is the size of our kitchen but our menu is extensive. Having too much fruit to hand will result in a high degree of spoilage (not so much oranges and apples but softer more fragile fruits such as strawberries and kiwifruit, of which we have a small quantity anyway). I’ll have a look around and see whare I can find space that does not denegrate the quality of the produce.
BTW, You asked for and got us to install a wireless internet facility so I would like to know whether you have used it yet.
The next time you are in, and I am around, please say ‘hi’ as although we may have met I am unable to make the ‘alien’ connection with the real you.
Again, I thank you for your comments and rest assured that they will bring about adjustments in training, pro-activity and service as it is feedback such as this that can ultimately ensure that we continue to strive to offer the public a better product in terms of qulaity and value.

Thanks Bob. I didn’t know you’d installed WiFi and left to spend the rest of the afternoon at Bobwundaye as I had work to do and I knew they had it there. Which is fine, as I love to hang with Cathy, but I’d have just as well stayed there. Ok, then, I’ll see you this weekend with my powerbook, then. Not sure which day.
As far as fruit goes, there are some excellent melons to be found now, and pipa (don’t know english name). Soon will be mango season, and papaya.
So waffles and strawberries or melon would be nice.
In the summer, waffles and mangoes. Fresh (not canned) pineapple, etc.
Also, Costco often carries imported winter fruits, like blueberries, raspberries, etc.
If your staff cut up some fruit and stored it in plastic tubs in your walk-in, it should last through brunch.
Now what about that brunch champagne? Mimosas?
See you this weekend.
Wi-Fi? Really? Great. Carnegies is walking distance from both my work and home, so that will dfinitely be a plus. Of course, I already spend too much money there, so maybe this is not such a good thing after all…
Regarding Captain Shannon’s post earlier: I don’t personally know either of you, although I assume he is the manager and/or owner of the pub by the same name, which I have visited a couple of times. I saw nothing objectionable in his post, and was surprised at your reaction. I have no idea about your past history with each other. Personally, I know several guys who would consider his comments an endorsement, but then again I don’t know what kind of image you are trying to project. Just an observation, so take it for what you will.
Just to throw my two cents in on this general thread, I have always been satisfied with both the food and service at Carnegies, especially lunch on Christmas Day, even though I arrived just as the sign was being removed to signal lunch was ending.
The glass left my throat a little scratchy, but I’ll survive. It certainly wasn’t as gross as the 100% raw beef that was in my taco at TGI Friday’s not too long ago.
I’ve worked in restaurants before and you don’t always anticipate this stuff, and who knows how it got there. I’ve enjoyed dancing on your bar and enjoyed having brunch outdoors–a pretty good deal–and will certainly come back.
Let’s just say that it is always a good idea to put some extra reading material next to the toilet before heading off to to TGIF for a rancid dinner and stale beer.

TpeBoB–You really don’t have to do that, but I am sure Alien won’t mind me sharing your offer with her some Sunday afternoon.
No she wouldn’t, but I think it’d be embarrassing to show up there on a busy Sunday and say, “Hi, Bob! We’re here. Now where’s our free brunch?”
But it is nice to go somewhere accomadating. Thanks Bob.
Off topic:
I asked for garlic bread NOT on the menu at Q Bar once and she said they couldn’t do it. I told her how to make it and she brought out NON toasted bread, some butter, and chopped garlic!
Of course I sent it back after explaining that the butter should go ON the bread, then the garlic, and it should go in the oven.
You’d bloody think they could do that after all the money I’ve spent there over the years. But nooooo… it’s a big deal for them to think outside the box!
Agree with AWOL about the muesli and yogurt and fruit. But I imagine a fruit salad in an oversized parfait dish or brandy snifter with a dollop of yogurt sitting comfortably beside some crusty brown waffles.
Well I for one am not going back to Carnegie’s until the following conditions are met:
Wolf Blass and Cape Mentelle (how come everyone else gets the CM?) are off the menu. I simply cannot control myself and will drink too much (as opposed to other times when…)
All the waitresses learn to speak French, dress up in maid outfits or fur outfits like Fifi the poodle.
Bob Marshall admits to being a Scot and cuts off his ponytail.
A large American flag is hanged over the entrance with a large personally signed portrait of George W. Bush over the bar (and with those of Jacques Chirac and Kofi Annan in the bathrooms actually make that IN the urinals).
Once these demands are met, I will deign to drop by again.
