Montrealer facing beheading pleads with PM for help

Mohamed Kohail was sentenced in Saudi Arabia to a public beheading after a schoolyard brawl that led to a death. A Montreal man facing beheading in Saudi Arabia has written a letter directly to Stephen Harper, asking the prime minister to personally intervene in his case.

In it, Kohail tells Harper he feels his government has let him down.

“II feel my government had failed to help me in every simple legal and councillor [consular] procedure, which led me to the fate I am facing today, beheading by sword.”

Jesus, I am sick. Why do I get the sinking feeling nothing will be done to stop this?

A Canadian man faces the death penalty after a court in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, found him guilty of three counts of being a member of a terrorist organization.

Never fear, the Canadian peace movement is working hard on setting him free:

Here’s a glimmer of hope: we can say he isn’t a “real” Canadian, since he’s only been a Canadian citizen for 15 years.

Makhtal’s lawyer has said Makhtal was born in an ethnic Somalian region of Ethiopia called Ogaden. He moved to Somalia at age 11, then fled the country when he was a teenager, eventually arriving in Canada as a refugee in 1991. He became a Canadian citizen in 1994 and holds no other citizenship.

Hmm. Is 15 years long enough to be considered a “real” Canadian? I hope not.

I think we can trust Ethiopia to take out the trash for us this time.
