You should have been called in to the police station first before going to a prosecutor’s hearing, and been given the chance to have an office from the Foreign Affairs department take a statement from you of your account of the events. And they would also let you know what you’re being charged with. Do you know what you’re being charged with? Assault causing injury? Obstruction of liberty? Public insult? Threatening/intimidation? At the police station, they would also probably let you see any evidence that has been collected in the case. So it’s strange to me that you are going straight to the prosecutor instead of being questioned by the police first, and it should be a Foreign Affairs officer.
So find out what the charges are, and see what evidence there is against you. If the guy has a very weak case, then don’t offer anything. If he seems to have a fairly decent case against you, then go to mediation and offer something as long as it’s reasonable.
If you swore at/insulted him when the police were present and if he pressed charges for Article 309 (public insult) and the police heard you do it, and they made a witness statement saying that you said whatever, then that’s going to be enough evidence for a conviction. In that case, try to settle. You don’t need a lawyer (yet) but offer perhaps a few thousand but if he tries to get more out of you, then walk away. It’s not going to be worth paying this shmuck 10 or 15k if you just insulted him, and you’d get fined like 3-5k and something that small doesn’t even show up on a criminal record check. If you can’t mediate, then months later the prosecutor will make a decision to indict you or not.
I was quoted 85-100k for a case, with up to three court appearances. Ended up finding one for 60k. I can’t say she seemed great but I did most of the work myself (putting together evidence etc) and just needed someone to handle the logistics and everything that I couldn’t possibly know or do.
100k seems to be the low-end normal for an easy case paid as a lump sum. Others quoted as much as 25k/hr
80k a case is what I was quoted or 5 to 8 k an hour. There is a surplus of lawyers in the Taiwan market place. I basically did what you did a few years back and did most of the work myself. I didn’t need an English speaking lawyer so that is less expensive. The lawyer basically didn’t do much. Lawyers come in handy to file an appeal but for that you can hire the equivalent of a solicitor. I know a human rights lawyer that costs 100k per session just to sit in the courtroom and make sure the judge behaves.
