Cheap Supps [ whey powder ]

anyone know where to get some whey powder besides GNC, they want about 3000 for a tub. :astonished:

Costco sells EAS Premium Protein in 6lb (2.72kg) bags for $1000NT a pop. They also carry Weider brand in 6lb for the same price.

thanks alot zerosum

np buddha and welcome to the forums.

Oh also (you probably already know this but just in case you don’t) you will need a membership card to get in. Hope you find what you need there.

You could also just go to RT Mart (Da Run Fa) and purchase Quaker High-Protein Supplement, which has the same amount of protein per equivalent serving as GNC Whey, and it costs $500 for 1 kg. No membership needed!

Woah… are you serious? What difference is there between the Quaker supplement and the specialised bodybuilding supplements?

While we’re on the subject of supplements, I’m still looking for a cheap source of creatine. I can buy it through the gym but of course they add on 100% to the distributor’s price which is already well over 200% cost.

In the Quaker type supplements you will get a higher percentage of milk protein than in the EAS products. That’s not a bad thing but whey protein does absorb into your system faster which is what you want post-workout.

If you can get there, the Costco EAS protein is worth the membership cost alone when compared to the Quaker product (if you’re planning on buying more than one, as anyone serious about weight training should). It’s $999 for 2.72 kg, which is a considerably better deal. (Under NO circumstances buy the Weider brand - it’s virtually undrinkable and I’ve never had worse gas and other, uh, intestinal problems in my life)

The one thing that does concern me about Costco’s EAS protein is the listing of soy protein at number two in it’s blend of 5 different proteins. Soy protein in abundance isn’t very good for men as it increases estrogen levels and has even been linked to certain mental deficiencies in men in later life. I’m still drinking it though as studies have also shown that modest consumption has its benefits - I’ve just stopped consuming all other soy products (such as tofu) as a precaution. Maybe another way to alleviate any concerns would be to use the Costco protein and Quaker protein in combination, thus reducing the amount of soy you consume daily.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, you’re not going to find creatine cheaply in Taiwan. A GNC store may be a better deal than your gym though.

I’ve taken creatine numerous times and it does help but at Taiwan’s inflated prices your money is better spent on buying quality food.

If you’re in Hong Kong or Singapore, track down a GNC (or other sports supplements store) as it’s much cheaper in either locale.

Finally, if it’s creatine monohydrate you’re looking for/buying note that if you don’t mix it with grape juice or dextrose (dextrose is commonly marketed in pharmacies and some supermarkets as ā€˜baby sugar’ and it usually comes in packs of 5 grams) you’re probably throwing your money away. Most people can’t get the proper effects of creatine monohydrate without mixing it with one of these ā€˜transporters’ (to get the creatine into your cells). Generally, 5 grams of creatine monohydrate is mixed with between 25 and 35 grams of dextrose. That’s a lot of sugar.

Good luck.

has pretty good deals sometimes and is pretty prompt with their shipping.

I’m also now looking for protien powder. Unfortunately, I cannot consume wheat or dairy. I haven’t found any conclusive evidence about soy protein increasing estrogen levels or not. I think I’ll try it unless someone can recommend another source (besides lots of low fat, high protein food). No soy protein powder at Jong he Costco as of today.

There are a hundred different websites and forums out there with differing views in each about dietary exercise supplements. It’s a bit daunting and I have a fairly restrictive diet now.

And I’m still looking for a good gym with lots of free weights near Banchiao. Anyone? or A good gym near an MRT station? I don’t like California fitness from the minute I step in the door.

Another Question: Does California Fitness sell that powder stuff? I’ll pay ridiculous mark-up before I order on-line…

I’m lactose intolerant and I have no probs with the Costco EAS Premium Protein.

As far as gyms go, take a look at Gymlux. It’s a step up from the Californias imo. I’m not exactly sure if there is a Banciao branch but you can check here www.gymlux.com.tw. Or call Dino @ 0935-496-452 for more info, he speaks English.

Gymlux’s newest branch, located in the Taipei Arena (ncp.tcg.gov.tw/ncp/TaipeiArena/), is pretty nice… not many people in there yet either.

I probably wasn’t clear enough earlier when I said too much soy could be bad. Let me come clean - soy is actually much worse than I initially indicated - and not only in relation to estrogen/testosterone levels. Don’t believe me though - take a look at the links below.

Soy’s Thyroid Dangers (with claims that soy also induces brain aging among other things): thyroid.about.com/cs/soyinfo/a/soy.htm

Soy decreases testosterone levels (among other things):

More:
the7thfire.com/health_and_nu … nhood.html

Even more unpleasant new about soy (and don’t forget the related links at the bottom of the article):
soyonlineservice.co.nz/

This one includes a rather disturbing look at soy protein isolate:

And more:

Most of the concern about soy stems from the unfermented kind (basically, non-tofu group) and the isoflavones present. Even groups which are on the pro-soy side say this (note the first paragraph, soymilkquick.com/shouldmenworry.html). Of course, you can also find much on the Internet espousing the benefits of soy (funded, of course, by the powerful soy industry), and there certainly are some benefits. However, it is clear that a danger does exist in consuming soy and two or three beneficial factors are clearly negated by the multitude of harmful ones.

I buy from them regularly. Also, they have a tremendous supplement/training info library online at their site.

Thanks for posting that site. I will definitely do some comparison shopping, their prices and selection look good.

Do you guys know if the Chungho Costco location carries the EAS Whey Protein?
Are all the Costcos pretty much the same?

I picked some up today.
It’s gone up in price to 1299.

Man this is a nightmare. I decided to go for the easy option, and headed to RT Mart in Xindian to buy Quaker’s, but all they had was 10 shelves of powdered milk. I’m not keen on getting the Costco stuff if the soy screws you up, and ordering online is too expensive (generally a little shy of 3000NT with international shipping).

:help:

I’ve seen the Quaker one in quite a few places. I buy it in my local supermarket which is not a particularly well-stocked supermarket. I’m pretty sure Carrefour has it too.

As of last night the price is NT$1399. That’s up from NT$799 18 months ago.

How about shipping? A big tub of powder seems like it might be costly.
