I’m a little frustrated that for a 2-way ticket I paid $1000 and $650 for a 1-way this year. I’m looking now for a 1-way ticket back to the USA and can’t find anything cheaper than $1000! Does anyone know of a way to pay as little as possible?

Depends on when you want to go back.
The Shanghai Expo, largely responsible for the high ticket prices this year, ends in November.

International fares vary greatly depending on season. Fall and winter (except for holiday weeks) should be low season, but availability of the lower fares might be limited due to the expo. Fares on Mon - Thu are also generally lower than Fri-Sun.
It also depends on where in the states you’re flying back to. If you’re flying to Cali/Seattle/Vancouver, it’s much cheaper than say Dallas or NYC. I was lucky and got a one way from SFO to TPE for $392 back in February. Check http://matrix.itasoftware.com, which has a really useful search tool across various dates/cities/airlines. For one ways, expect prices to be in $600 range for west coast, $800 for NYC.
