Cheapest home internet service

Looking for a cheaper option for at home. Anyone know of any good offers for basic internet only service?

Impossible to properly answer without knowing your location. If you’re not a heavy user a cellphone package may work out the cheapest.

Except 4G has all the ports blocked and is subject to slowdowns due to traffic and poor latency.

What are you currently paying, and what are you looking for? Do you watch TV online, or not? Do you use a computer at home? If you just use a tablet and cellphone, then your cellphone plan may be enough, if you can tether to your cellphone.

For what it’s worth, our land line + internet plan is a little under $1000 per month.

(Oops, sorry @SuperS54 - this shouldn’t have been a reply to you directly. I’m trying to change that with an edit, but I don’t think I can.)

In Taipei City. No need for a landline. Internet usage is basic browsing, Dropbox use, YouTube watching, Calling via Skype, Line, etc.

Don’t want a 4G cellphone data plan because hotspotting to a computer / iPad is a PITA when needing to work and be online. Want a router on and WiFi access 24/7 without needing to constantly connect.

Current basic plan is $499 per month (KBro) and works ok - sometimes a little slow but no major problems. Want to find a better deal since contract is over.

Thanks!

You either cost down and get slower internet or cost up a bit and get the REAL internet.
You can get true fiber internet for 588 per month with Taipei Fiber (Taifo) 100/100Mbps. They have a cheaper 60Mbps plan but I don’t know the price, you need to contact one of their sales guys and will even give you a separate Wi-Fi router for free when you sign the contract.

It is possible to connect your Android phone to PC via USB cable and share mobile internet through USB. That’s faster and more stable than making a hotspot connection.
I don’t know if it would work with iPad. I’ve never bought anything from Apple.

4G can slow down depending on how many people use it, and given the proliferation of unlimited 4G internet, you can expect people to be using it massively. It has horrible lags too so for online gaming this is going to hurt a lot.

Agree. I would not rely on mobile internet if internet connection is essential.
My tip was aimed to improve the connection between mobile phone and computer.

That’s a good tip to remember in case I have android / PC setup in the future. At home it’s currently Apple profucts.

So a good stable connection is essential.

An aside on the mobile topic - I have a CHT mobile plan. It works great - everywhere except at home! I have to go to my wash balcony to take/make calls. This would drive me bonkers if I relied on this for internet connection.

You always need a line, be it copper or fiber. The combination phone/internet has been abandoned years ago. Otherwise go 4G.

My landlord has BB TV (CNS -äøå˜‰) in my place , not sure which internet package is , but the internet is fast enough for basic browsing, Dropbox use, YouTube watching, Calling via Skype, Line, etc.

I meant no need for a landline phone service. Maybe redundant if it’s not offered here in Taiwan. Other countries still use the ā€œlandlineā€ for local communication. But now that I think of it some Taiwanese hotlines are only free if calling from landline. :woman_shrugging:

Thanks. Will look and see if this service is available in our area.

Until a few years back you only got internet connection if you took a phone landline (CHT) or a cable TV account to go with it.

It seems the options are limited depending on the district.

Anyone in Zhongzheng District in Taipei know this company?

Does their internet only service sucks as much the reviews indicate?

I use payphones to call 0800 numbers or Skype will call them free as well. I’d get a landline for stability as it’s only $100 a month but I don’t want to pay the setup fee so cell phone only it is.

And to be honest, hotspotting from mobile has never let me down

FYI basically every single provider uses Chunghwa telecom cables, because they just didn’t bother building their own. Generally Chunghwa telecom is still the most stable for video streaming and online gaming. Rumor has it that Chunghwa wanted to lower their prices, though objected by other ISPs because Chunghwa would just snatch all customers.
Many tv providers also run internet services, but you can imagine what happens when tv and internet shares the same cable.

I’m using 4G from Fareastone using a 4G capable router (tp-link archer) and it works great but it’s also 499 with a 1 year contract and it’s slow during peak hours. Your kbro sounds like your best bet still tbh.

I’ve had exactly the opposite experience. CHT in the few apartments I used it over the years absolutely sucks, terribly unstable and overpriced. I’ve used our local cable supplier and have no issue with youtube/netflix/gaming etc. plus their service people are available at hours that working people need them not CHT’s 9~5 M~F BS. Currently paying 699/mth for 500/60 with a proper wireless router.
