“a lying duplicious scumbag”
it’s easier to spell politician than
lying duplicitous scumbag, and they both mean
the same thing.
I guess it is time to get those foreign passports ready for a quick exit soon.
I’m sure the crack military on Taiwan can handle any fallout that will occur…
THE question has been “With all the shouting and arm waving, does he really have the balls?” And I think the answer has been pretty clear.
“I guess it is time to get those foreign passports ready
for a quick exit soon.”
-as I recall, you and your family left long ago.
as if we are very worried with an attack from China…
Anyone really cares, or are you just getting on with biz as usual?
I think people are more concerned about the attack from the Hoklo supremacist.
All of the sudden a name may change…
Because quite frankly the PRC is predictable in their behavior, they have the ASL set as their guidelines.
Hoklo supremacist are the ones that are unpredictable in the equation, speaking obscure dialects in public policy speeches that not even all of Taiwan can follow.
As with every other ROC citizen on this board. How else do we communicate in this foreign language? Gawd knows how difficult it is to obtain this level of fluency just by attending buxiban on Taiwan.
ac, you want to ask my wife? She is fluent enough in English…
I don’t think Chen Shui-bian’s antics mean anything. Isn’t this just a repeat of the same act he’s been putting on for years? Pretending to make a stance, only to back off when its clear the legislature (and the United States) has no intention of backing his moves?
If he really had “balls”, he wouldn’t be making an announcement of his intentions at a FAPA (or whatever) meeting. His DPP would be scheduling a referendum, or he’d present his revised constitution.
Beijing won’t attack now for one reason alone: it believes it has a partner in the Blues. We may only be 12 months away from a total reversal of all of these policies, with Ma or Wang in office. Or, we may only be 12 months away from an all-Green legislature + President Annette Lu.
Thanks cc for injecting some common sense in to this thread.
It’s posturing crowd-pleasing from Chen and nothing more.
Then she is half way there to becoming a US national. I’m sorry to hear she had to suppress her inner Hoklo self.
ac, she also speaks French, does that mean she can also get a French Passport? And why not get an UK passport? As far as I know, English is also good for England, no? But then again, she is not the kind that would “suppress” whatever. She is proud of being Taiwanese, although sometimes she is not proud of what some Taiwanese do. But then again, how can you really understand the pride of being a Taiwanese? (and I say Taiwanese, I don’t specify which type, Hoklo, Hakka, whatever, you are always the one pushing the ethnic envelope here)
I’m in Shenzhen now. I saw this on the news in HK last night. Both the English news and the Cantonese news that I watched portrayed Chen as a dangerous radical acting against the will of the Taiwanese people. They showed Chen Shuibian giving his little speech followed by Wen Jiabao denouncing him and then Ma Yingjiu saying that this was all unnecessary since Taiwan was de facto independent. My first impression was that I was sure few people in Taiwan would have noticed since Chen is pretty unpopular and everyone was focussing on the possible candidates for the 2008 election, but I guess I was wrong.
Right now there’s the National People’s Congress going on in Beijing. That sort of thing is completely scripted months in advance. It’s obvious that Wen Jiabao’s intended focus was to be the environment and sustainable development, but it looked like he had to insert some “death to Taiwanese independence” boilerplate as well. I’m fairly sure that Chen timed this announcement while the CCP was all distracted with the NPC.
I just hope the NT doesn’t sink against the US dollar too much while I’m away on vacation. All my savings are still in NT.
A side note, I can’t believe how even the The Standard and the South China Morning Post are breathlessly reporting from the NPC. They seem like bigger CCP ass-kissers than even the People’s Daily.
Maybe it’s just been too long since you’ve seen productivity from government. The NPC and the CCP aren’t remotely democratic, but they’re making good progress in solving very difficult problems.
47% increase in education spending! 87% increase in health spending! There’s progress here; it’s gotten to the point where the US-based, education-focused charity that I donate to is no longer soliciting money for scholarships for junior high/high school educations.
Hi,
A couple of factors to consider…
- the size of China’s population
- the previous levels of spending
I’ve done no analysis, however I do wonder about these percentages. If the previous dollar amounts were insignificant per capita, then an increase even double, may not be much.
Something else to consider, what portion of that spending is actually applied to the purchase it was budgeted for? There is a lot of heresay about corruption in China, does this alleged corruption eat into these funds?
Two things I find ironic, based on articles I’ve read in western and Taiwanese newspapers…
-
China increases education spending - but limits access to knowledge and information on the internet.
-
China increases health spending - but has been accused of suppressing disease outbreaks like SARS
Sorry, couldn’t resist writing this.
Regards
Michael

-Ac Dropout
AC after reading this comment I remember our conversation a few months ago and it read something like this…
dlin: Shih Ming-Teh is pulling this because he’s pissed that A-bian never gave him a nice job with a big office and a nice salary…ac_dropout what country do you consider yourself from??
AC:So if CSB offered SMT a job now the protest will stop?
Depends who is asking and why? My answers usually reflect what will result in my best interest.
If you are an angry Muslim, I’m an ROC citizen the believes in the eventual independence of Xinjiang.
dlin:So if china attacked would you protect the so called ROC?
AC:Always have, always will. But the point is not all of ROC diplomatic options have been exhausted yet, so I see no need to pursue any form of military adventurism or antagonize the other side over the Strait Issue.
Which is another reason CSB must go. He acts as if all the diplomatic solutions have been exhausted. And like a hack is trying to sell snake oil to the general population as a solution.
If he has been embezzling funds out of ROC secret diplomacy funds with fake receipts, they really should reintroduce capital punishment back on Taiwan for this guy.
just wondering if that still true? :s[/quote]

Your Pres Bush speaks in a language that many in the USA dont understand too. His public speaking on policy… who has a clue what he’s on about?
Can’t recall the last time I left Taiwan to live overseas and my English still seems to be OK AC…

But you’re just 1 in 24 million. I still stand by my statement fluency at this level is difficult to obtain just by living in Taiwan, without having foriegn parents or attending American School. Let’s put it this way if every kid that attended buxiban for English could obtain fluency and command of English outside of standardize exam you think there would be any Chinglish on Taiwan.
So which buxiban are you endorsing?
What it means is that she is not in tune with the Greens. Why suppress her Hoklo self for French or English? The French and the English need to learn Hoklo on Taiwan. You claim she is proud to be Taiwanese. But I assure you the Greens I normally speak out against would find her not proud enough to be Taiwanese.
I think you misunderstand only LTH ever advocated the neo-Taiwanese that included all groups on Taiwan. CSB promotes a Taiwanese that is Hoklo exclusive. LTH is no longer the president and no longer sets the pace to ethnic relations in Taiwan.
That is the main problem with the DPP party, you may support democracy or even TI, but all other groups within the DPP cannot forward their interest either due to local party opposition or internation opposition. The only group that is really advancing their interest in the DPP are the Hoklo extremist.
Think about CSB recent speach, what language did he use to renounce the 5 no’s. It wasn’t in English nor Hakka. And barely in Mandarin. Taiwan didn’t renouce the 5 no’s, just Hoklo Taiwan.
