They need so desperately foreign cash. In Chengdu, when I went 2 weeks ago, the upscale malls were deserted, most of the duty free shops at the Airport closed during prime afternoon time.
Saw a few Western tourists, but internal tourism is really going on the budget. Happy to see this policy renewed, can have more chances to go and visit, since, as I keep saying, I don’t hate China per se, I hate the CCP and its cronies.

I don’t think those high-end malls have ever been that reliant on (Western) tourist spending? I can’t imagine many people are flying from Europe to China to buy Hermès handbags etc.?
well, they need to get some money somewhere, right? If the locals r not spending, they need to “import” the spenders. On the bigger numbers someone who will buy there will be.
It won’t help that much, but this tell the level of desperation at the high echelons of the Chinese intelligentsia.
I’m getting the impression high end stuff is for locals. If Chinese don’t feel like buying imported expensive handbag, it’s either they don’t have the money for it, or thinks it’s a crap value (which to be honest with you, they mostly have crap value).
