The Chinese are some of the most openly racist people in the world, but are the first to scream racism even for the slightest perceived slights. Anyone remember the washing machine ad where a dirty black man gets put into the washing machine and a clean non-black comes out? How about the recent reports of Chinese company workers in Kenya openly calling their black workers monkeys?
But, a Chinese woman eating pizza with chopsticks is so much worse, right?
This is a pretty interesting documentary about a chinese laoban trying to build a few roads in the Congo. You could say they definitely have a clash of cultures.
i was told the main thing they are pissed off about is a leaked conversation of the boss calling chinese people shit and stinky or something like that. which would make sense, i don’t see chinese people getting too riled up over the advert, other than using a girl which chinese would consider ‘countryside’ looking.
but it is pretty hypocritical especially as the chinese company’s never seem to apologize after they do the same.
These designers biggest consumers are the Chinese. Most of them are owned by the Chinese now. In Italy, the stores all speak Chinese with so many Chinese tourists that come for shopping designer good in Italy. And you can see the stuff they put out have been tailored to chinese taste, lost of red color and patterns that Chinese people like. Ugly imo. But they are buying so.
It was like this for me where I went to University. I suspect there has been immediate change there, given that from what I have seen (increased Chinese character presence in advertisements, etc.) these businesses are wise enough to notice.
That ad was such a waste of opportunity. Chinese like to say they invented pizza and cannoli, well, show both ping and steamed buns and pizza side by side. Make friends not enemies. But I guess that if in their heart they hate the people who buy their stuff they will stir towards this stuff.
Yeah, the Chinese are racist, but poking fun at them will not make brownie points but rather unleash the insecurities and voy, can they hold a grudge.
I really appreciate his design style but I think he should watch his mouth. I remember a scandal from a year back when he called Selena Gomez “ugly” publicly on Instagram. It’s just those things where if you are a designer of that caliber you cannot do.
This is way worse and wouldn’t be surprised if China will not allow his brand to sell over there anymore, especially because rich Chinese people are the only ones who can afford it these days.
Basically this. It’s not the ad they care about but the remarks that they are pissed about. If those were truly said by the guy I wouldn’t blame the mainlanders for being upset and boycotting the brand.
