Chinese New Year Song in English! Looking for

Hi! I’m looking for the Chinese New Year “Song Gongxi Ni” song in English. I’ve heard it many times when doing my New Years shopping. It’s a rambling song in “Bruce Lee” movie Chinglish that talks about staying up all night, visiting friends etc.

Anyway… I hear it every year and I’d like to get a copy to use in class. Thanks.
All my searches just find the Chinese version, so please help me out. Thanks.

Is it this one?

Mei tiao da jie shao xiang,

meigaren da jue li,

jin men de i ju hua,

jiu shi gongxi gongxi!

Gongxi gongxi gongxi ni - a!

Gongxi gongxi gingxi ni!

Yes, that’s the song. But there is an English version! When you go shopping next week, pay attention! There are two versions. Yes, the Chinese version that nobody really listens to anymore. And also the English version.

It’s corny lyrics go something like this "New Years Here… that time of year… then Gonxin ni etc.

Anyway… I’d like the song. Thanks.

I just sing:

dee da li

da dee da li

dee da li da deeee

clang, clang, clang, clang, clang
(banging on pots and pans)

My wife and daughter both lovingly respond as follows: :unamused:

Yes, I’ve heard it before in English. As far as I recall, it’s not an exact translation of the Chinese. I recommend that you just go to a biggish CD shop that isn’t too cool and ask the clerk for English CNY music.

I’m glad someone else heard it in English… My family and most of you probably think I’m crazy. :loco:

Here’s the thing. I’ve been here for ten years. When we go shopping its hectic. The wife like most typical Taiwanese have heard this song Gong XI Ni song millions of times and don’t hear it anymore.

So, there I go… Hey… is this song in English? My wife is talking to a sales person, or the children are talking too loud or I can hear the song… but the background noise is to loud and she can’t.

So… a number of years It’s only me that’s hear it.

OK… I need the name of that song… So I can get it. Who hear has 1 heard the song. and 2. actually can find the correct name of it. The typical Chinese just doesn’t hear this song anymore.

I heard it for the first time this year. Coming from the Easy Shop. I’m glad I was in a hurry. I was also alone. Picture some bald foreigner running into the easy shop to find the title of a song that is playing… For those of you who don’t know… the easy shop is like Victoria Secret. Please help…

Now you got my curiosity. I’ve also been here 10 years and I haven’t noticed the song in English.

:noway:

(I’ll ask in the library here. They should know)

At Last, I’ll have some vindication that this song does exist  . Probably not :wall:

Yes, the song, as it exists in my imagination since only I hear it, is not an exact tranlsation of the Gonxi ni song.

It’s more of an introduction/explanation of the tradition of Chinese New Year from the cleaning of the house, shopping for things to staying up all night.

Basically it’s basically done in corny Chinglish verse. Punctuated by Gonxi Ni.

BY the way… a good (at least I think it is good with my limited Chinese) translation of the song is available in a flash animation at this website.

don’t forget to type http: before pasting the link in the browser. I tried using the ebbeded link but it did not work.

The animation is cute but its done by a Chinese Comunist. You’ll see at the end, the PRCs Flag being passed around. I was going to ask the original poster of this youtube video if it was really necessary to nationalize this song because there are Chinese communities world wide. Then I saw his name. Something like Comrade red… Ok…

Enjoy… please help me find that song.

I’d be more than happy to give you a translation for the main body of the Gongxi ni song, here it goes:

Congratulations~congratulation~congratulations~youuuuuu…
Congratulations~congratulation~congratulations~youuuuuu…
Na~nyaa~nyanya~nyanya… :discodance:
Congratulations~congratulation~congratulations~youuuuuu…
Congratulations~congratulation~congratulations~youuuuuu…
Na~nyaa~nyanya~nyanya… :discodance:

Basically you just keep singing it til you can sing no more.
