Might be something about renewal through death (actual or symbolic). In Chinese culture white is the color of purity and fullfillment, but also that of death. Also, cremation is widely practiced among Buddhists.

I’m pretty sure Jesus says something along similar lines but I can’t remember where. The idea of being ‘purified’ through hardship.
