CNY Hike on February 7th
Then let’s fix it for Feb. 7th.

We can choose between Hapen and Tonghou later, and maybe MM or someone else will want to set up another hike or hikes during the holidays, but at least we can set our sights on this one now as a definite fixture.

I’ll add the date to the title of this thread.
Excellent! And my professor would join us.

Next Saturday, I would go to Fushan village to scout trailheads of Hapen and Fuba trails and go hiking in Kalamoji trail if the weather promise. And I would go hiking with a friend in Fushan section of Fuba trail next Sunday. I am keen to explore some interesting trails.

Hapen national trail connects Fushan in Wulai with Fushan reserve park. And Tonghou national trail connects Xiaoyi in Wulai and Xiaojiaoxi in Yilan.

Saturday looks to be a bit warmer but positively pissin’ doon. (Kate: that’s “Raining hard”). Good luck.

I am interested in a one day walk on Feb 7th. Anywhere… within reason, my wife wants to walk too. Can’t do a 2-day walk, nor do I want to in this weather.

Sure do hate winters in Taipei. Where did the sky go? Who replaced it with this thick grey wet smog?

What sort of distance are you likely to cover?

I’ve really enjoyed some of the Richard Saunders " Taipei Day Trips" recently but I have to say I’m exhausted after finishing one of the 5-6 km ones. (I just did the SanDiaoLing Waterfall walk but couldn’t stretch to the extra 2km detour) :frowning:

I’m guessing you are aiming to go much further though?

I’ll be very interested to hear your reconnaissance reports

It’ll be a one-dayer.

I’ll look forward to having the two of you along with us again.

It’ll be much longer than 5-6 km - most likely something like 15-20, and perhaps even more.

Put me down as a maybe. I’ve got a photo shoot to do down south until the 5th or 6th and may end up staying somewhere down there for a few extra days. If not and I make it to Taipei on the evening of the 6th, I’ll come on the hike.

I hope you’ll be able to make it, CF.

I wount be able to join on the 7th, have to visit the family down south and I am not gonna go through the peak traffic times so I will be there before everybody goes and come up again after few days staying. I might try to explore the area down there a bit, my Mahjong playing sucks and 5 to 7 days of permanent eating and drinking are just too much for me anyway.
Any suggestions for good trails down south, will be a bit north of Tainan Xuejia is the name of the town.

I still would like to join a hike thought, so if there is another one comeing up when I am up north again than I will try to be on that one. Pitty as this one would be a nice one with some lenght, not just a lazy afternoon stroll.

Between, I need to go out more on hikes now anyway as I started with the first step of my photo page (well later should be more than photos on there), if just the weather would be a bit better, not for me but the equipment is a bit picky on that one.

Enjoy all your hikes and take care guys (and Kate…)

I’d like to go on a multi day hike, but I don’t think that is going to happen. I am moving on Chinese New Year, but maybe I could take a day off and join you. I am in desperate need of getting in some exercise after a month of travel and visiting (and eating). 20 k may leave my muscles a bit shaky, but it is better than trying to claim getting exercise from wii (no, I don’t partake).

Anyhow, is there a plan for transportation? Trains? Planes?

Just turn that “maybe I could” into an “I will” and you’ve got yourself a plan.

Perhaps we could arrange a parachute drop onto the trailhead, but we’ll probably just meet at Sindian MRT station and head up there in cars.

Parachute drop? Oooo…
On the other hand, cars are less likely to get hung up in the vegetation. I hate it when that happens.

Thanks for the explanation, Kate. 2/7 is out for me. Will be down south, hopefully, I can join the next
hike. Cheers!

Sounds easy enough.
“I will take a day off and join you.”

Gee, that was easy-ish.

The weather sucks! I am getting sick of it. It seems we wouldn’t be able to get into the woods during CNY. :frowning:

It’s only a week away. I really doubt I will be healthy enough to tackle a long hike.

It looks like I’m going to be down south so won’t be able to make it.

Damnation and darnation, this is falling apart!

The latest forecast for CNY Eve is the temperature down to 9C and lots of rain a-falling. Just about as bad as it could possibly be.

When the weather started getting worse and worse and I told the wife I’d still do the hike no matter how bad it got, she said I’d surely end up going alone. I fear she was right, but I may just have to revise my own plans.

Is anyone else determined to get out for a hike no matter how bad the weather turns out? How about a shorter hike on terrain that won’t have been turned too mucky by the endless rain?

I’s still like to go…
A shorter one might be better for me as I am waiting for a replacement for my good jacket and an now relying on a very old rain jacket. I could test out how long it lasts in the rain.

I like to go, too.

I thought you would cancel it because of the lousy weather.

How difficult is the Hapen Trail? From the pics I say curtesy of Kate it looks relatively flat. I sure would like to get out for at least a few hours even if I feel like hell the next day.

Anyway, this means still count me in even though I may have to bail out halfway if the hike is long.

Well then, let’s keep our sights set on the Hapen Trail, but just to go as far along it as we all feel comfortable with.

Even if we go only a quarter of the way along it or less, it should be a very enjoyable hike as well as a worthwhile reconnaissance. And if we like it enough, we can go back and do the whole thing when the weather’s better (in the spring) and when everyone’s in good condition for it.
