CNY Hike on February 7th

Certainly! I hope MM and Chris will be around so we can arrange one or other of those.

Perhaps we could fix a day for it well ahead of the holidays (to allow for the planning of other things around it), and go ahead with it regardless of the weather.
We were thinking of doing some hike - possibly multi-day - during CNY.

I’m not leaving Taiwan…tickets are either too expensive or impossible to obtain…as usual (didn’t used to be like this, back in the good old days)
CNY is from Feb 6th to 10th, we have plenty of time to talk about hiking in Wulai or Pinling. And MM can take time and good care to recover from Denggue Fever (Yes, poor pal, I bet on it).

What date is the best day of CNY for hiking?
Let’s have a separate thread to discuss this and set it up.

I have to make the usual visits to the in-laws for the family gathering on New Year’s Eve and to hui niang jia on chu er. I expect many others are the same. But all of the other days are good for me.

I’d initially suggest that New Year’s Day (Feb. 7th) might be the best for the hike. There shouldn’t be so many people out and about on that day, whereas from the 2nd (Feb. 8th) onwards the roads and all scenic destinations will be choked with traffic and people.

What do others have to say?

Either Feb 7th or Feb 8th is fine with me.

But if we set up on Feb 7th, I can’t stay up on CNY’s Eve.

Sure you can! You’re used to getting by with just a few hours’ sleep, aren’t you? And while lack of sleep may dim mental faculties, it shouldn’t impair the physical faculties needed for hiking.

I’m game for a CNY hike, as long as we don’t go south when everyone else is doing the same.

We’d certainly want to keep the road travel to a minimum.

So of Kate’s three proposals, the Tonghou and Hapen options would seem to be best, involving just a 30-odd km drive out past Wulai and good two-way hikes along isolated trails far from the madding crowds.

I hope to be game for such outings. The Bafu (Fuba?) trail is out of the question as the Beihen becomes a parking lot during CNY.

A fellow who keeps himself as fit and eats as healthily as you will surely be able to shake off the effects of the dengue fever or whatever’s afflicting you well before then.

Yes, I should be fine. I’m just bored out of my febrile head these days.

Sounds fun and I hope I can catch up with you guys soon again for another hike but I will have to go down south to visit the family at leat for the first days of CNY. Well, will see how it goes and maybe it works out somehow.

Have fun on the hikes but get first healthy (Muzha Man).

Hey mingshah good to hear from you again. BTW, do you know about the sale of Cloud 9? I’m sad to see that place leave foreign hands.

Yes, I know about it and I am sad too even it is not sure where it will head too. Andre is searching for a buyer of his equipment and stuff up there and to overtake the camp wiht everything included. I tried to forward it to people who might be interested but not sure who would have the money and the interest in running the camp from now on.

Andre himself is currently in Guangzhou, so who ever is in the area can visit him there. He simply can’t make it back for the upcoming season so he wants to sell it. Would be good if someone over takes it and runs it in a similar style.

Anyone interested in more details can PM me too.

What? Say it ain’t so!!

Unfourtunately it is so, well at least the sell, not yet sure who will take it thought. Any volunteers?

That’s true!! And I actually believe that I would be too excited to sleep at the night before the hike as I usually do.

So which trail will we take? Tonghou or Hapen?

I read that actually hikers can complete hiking either one of them with 8-9 hours. Will we plan a one-day hike or is there other ways to extend it to a two-day hike?

Since MM and I have both done Tonghou but not Hapen, I’m inclined a bit more toward the latter. But either would do for me nicely enough.

Does anyone have a particular preference for one or the other?

My preference is Hapen trail, too. Hapen is not as popular as Tonghou and Bafu (or Fuba) but hikers can see scenic views of Nanshi Xi and do a little bit of river tracing alone Lumen Xi and Bolu Xi. It will be fun.

Are we still trying to set up a date for CNY hike? Can we make it a one-day hike?

I have gotten too many invitations for outings and functions from friends and need to manage my CNY schedule.

Can we set up a date for it?

I’m up for a hike, be it one-day or two.

Then let’s fix it for Feb. 7th.

We can choose between Hapen and Tonghou later, and maybe MM or someone else will want to set up another hike or hikes during the holidays, but at least we can set our sights on this one now as a definite fixture.

I’ll add the date to the title of this thread.

Could someone please explain where “Hapen and Tonghou” are???
