Be aware everyone that I may wear the green cape tomorrow.
Bobb, welcome and if you do go there will be room for you in one of the cars.
Omni, if it is a 5am start on a the Fuba trail you’ll be doing it alone.

How many are going?
Kitty and I are in!
So everyone be sure to bring your cameras!

Then it looks like we’ll have:
I haven’t missed anyone out, have I?
And some good news: I went up to Wulai this morning to swim in the Jiajiuliao Stream, and conditions weren’t bad at all. The rain was steady more often than heavy, and the car thermometer showed the outside temperature fluctuating between a mildish 10 and 11 degrees centigrade. It was very comfortable walking on the trail, and not even uncomfortable in the water. If conditions are similar or better tomorrow, we should be set for a most enjoyable outing.
Swimming? Today?
So tomorrow I’ll have a green capes and you’ll have blue balls.
If people want to go for a hot spring afterwards we could try Full Moon Spa as they have mixed outdoor facilities:
It’s just off the tourist street. But it could be very busy.
Anyway, good idea to bring a change of clothes tomorrow for after the hike.
I don’t think we’ll be gracing you with our presences, m’dears. Sorry to let you down and all, but this weather SUX. All Omni’s happy talk about a “pleasant 10 degrees” is politics and spin, I am sure. Since when has a wet 10 degrees ever been pleasant?
I’ll just go and be depressed and hang around somewhere warm. Bowling, perhaps.
You don’t know Omni. ![]()
Enjoy hurling black balls at little white figures with red necks.
Very off topic. My excuse is being frazzled from a stressful move. (Let’s hire Steven, I said. No, I want to get my crew to do it, he said.
I am not saying I told you so. But I really want to.)
Gee, Kate, my biological clock is reversed, too. Or wait, has it just commenced ticking?
I am in the midst of moving out of my flat, which is a maternity hospital (another long story) and there were a LOT of babies born in the last couple days, especially last night! (… perhaps people are trying to avoid having their babies born in the year of the cheater… I mean champion, which starts tomorrow.)
Anyhow, all those babies and excited (nervous) parents got my biological clock turned a little upside down. I guess I at “that” age. Sigh.
just ribbing ya, Kate. Biological clock usually refers to women who realize they really want kids and are aware of only having a certain number of years in which it is healthy to do so (usually hits women hard in their 30’s). Circadian rhythms is often used to refer to peoples’ natural sleep cycle over a 24 hour period. Or something like that.
I am still eager to hear about that memory study, and whether you are after subjects! I am volunteering to be your lab rat!
(This post is really to confirm I am coming tomorrow. Now, which box is the peanut butter in…? See you all tomorrow!)
“biological clock” is commonly used for both meanings in English, in my experience.
Great! See you tomorrow!
MuchaMan won’t have access to his car tomorrow, so I’ll drive my car. I can fit 5 people in it, including the driver.
Good morning, all!
Are you going to be joining us, Bobb? If we don’t hear from you and you’re not there when everyone else has arrived, we won’t be able to wait, I’m afraid.
Although it’s still raining steadily now, it’s not too cold. The met boys have been forecasting a gradual change from so-called 濕冷 (wet cold) to 乾冷 (dry cold) during these holidays, so we just need that to happen today and we’ll be laughing our heads off.
See you all at nine!
Really? Gee, I have never heard that. Hardly surprising, mind you, as people in my demographic are much more likely to use the latter definition. ![]()
Sorry if I mislead you by insisting on only my definition, Kate! ![]()
Excellent hike, folks! Thank you SO much to Chris and Omni for driving. Thanks to everyone for great company to ring in the year of the rat. It was good to get out and enjoy the (almost) balmy weather.
Now to find my trunks…

Yes! It was a wonderful hike for a new year! Great company, nice trail and pretty cool weather.
My favorite part actaully is the landslide part, it turns out to be the most-not-boring part. I could smile when people were taking pictures of me even though I was scary to death.
I will post few photos after I uploading them to flickr.

Didn’t you find enough trunks today? ![]()
Lovely hike all. Just the thing to get me back in shape after 5 weeks of illness and recovery. Hopefully I will be as chipper tomorrow.
The hot spring was nice. Average facilities (5-6 pool of various sizes and a row of pressure showers) but the location right at the start of so many of our favorite hikes can’t be beat. I’m sure our water was a lot warmer than Omni’s though I suppose he had the river to himself.
Congrats to katelin for swimming 4m underwater.
Great hike…I’m glad the rain wasn’t too bad. It weather got worse, but by that time we were back at the cars. The trail was very easy, except for negotiating the landslide; there were a couple stream crossings that we managed without slip-ups. I’d love to do the whole thing on a dry day.
Great company too… glad to finally meet kage and Bobb!
Yes, it was another very enjoyable day out, good in every respect. As it turned out, the weather truly wasn’t a problem at all - we were bloody lucky that the rain was never much more than drizzle. My swim capped the day off perfectly and was most refreshing.
I’ll be looking forward to venturing further along that trail, ideally in dry weather and under blue sky, and eager to have a go at the river-tracing that looked so inviting.
I’m glad to hear that those hot-spring facilities received the MM stamp of approval. I’ve often thought of checking them out, but have yet to do so. From what you said about Kate swimming underwater, am I to assume that there was a pool there large and deep enough for real swimming?

Er, no. Maybe waist high which is actually great for people learning to swim. Or so it seems.
The place is nothing fancy. Definitely not as nice as the one in Sanxia. But it’s clean, has nice changing rooms, and the simple modern pools makes for a nice relaxing soak after a hike.
Warm and sunny all day here in Chungle County. Watched TV and drank whisky all day.
Thanks to two coaches’ instruction, I can swim under water. It is one of the best thing happened to me in years.
And actually, the pool’s depth is only 70cms, most kids around me in the pool swam better than I.
Happy hikers:

Two landslides:

Thanks for posting those pictures, Kate.
MM, have you been feeling any adverse effects today?

Yes, but it has nothing to do with the hike, but rather the hike spring afterwards. Happy to say I am feel pretty much recovered from tsutsugamuchi. No tiredness or fever or malaise after the hike.
But I did aggravate a neck problem by treading water too much in the pools. Argh. Woke up barely able to turn my head to the left. It’s better today though this kind of thing always takes months to completely heal. Fortunately I will be in Canada in two weeks and can visit my local magic-worker, aka physiotherapist.
