But they can in Taiwan (and in most of the world), so the authorities would have no valid reason to go after him. As noted, the US is unusually conservative. Europeans would apply Bree’s interpretation: creepy, but not a sensible use of police time. Sexual relations, unfortunately, is full of sordid dealings, predatory behaviour, and exploitation, and the law is a blunt instrument for dealing with them. There are plenty of 30-year-old women with the emotional maturity of 12-year-olds, and the law can’t protect them from themselves.
If she lied about her age though there’s an interesting legal conundrum. I was reading somewhere that, under UK law at least, a man who lies about something in order to get into a woman’s pants could (in theory) be successfully prosecuted for rape. Luckily, that particular interpretation isn’t applied too widely since it would leave roughly six men outside of jail to repopulate the earth (two Mormons, one JW, three Quakers) and the entire female workforce paying for the incarceration of the rest. Anyway, if sexual equality before the law is an actual thing, this must surely apply in reverse; but what happens if the girl is legally competent, not legally entitled to consent to sex, and lies to get the deed done? Are they both guilty of rape? If not why not?

It’s fine to have a philosophical debate about the age of consent, but I’m pretty sure he’s broken the law in TX regardless if she’s lied about her age or not.

Wasn’t some kid prosecuted for having naked pictures of himself on his cellphone, a few years back? I can’t remember the exact story, but I think he was about 16 at the time.

The age of consent is 12 in the Philippines; that doesn’t mean you can go around banging 12 year olds in Taiwan (or any other country). He still broke the law and I can’t believe there are so many people defending this piece of shit. He’s seemingly trying to avoid going back and facing justice so he probably knows he’s fucked.
“Unusually” conservative is a stretch. 16 is still 16, and as previously noted there are Romeo and Juliet provisions in most states so the law really only affects, oh I don’t know, 30 year olds who solicit 16 year olds.
A lot of ‘ifs’ that involve a complete disconnect from the reality of the case.
Probably, if they can prove it, but I’m sure he should be more worried about the statutory rape. Also, the whole paying her $500 opens up a whole new layer of charges involving child prostitution. He’s probably mega-screwed.
Common sense will need to prevail at some point. I feel it’s in short supply around these parts, but come on.

Ha, yeah, women are so lame being victims of sexual assault, harassment by assholes, then being dismissed offhand by everybody when they do report it. Why don’t they ever come forward earlier!??!?! We could have dismissed them then!

Are we so sure that this girl even sees herself as a victim of sexual assault? Is she pressing charges? I’m sure she doesn’t want all this negative publicity.
In no way am I defending him. However, in the same breath, so many are making her out to be a “victim” when she herself might not even see it that way. She lied about her age to get what she wanted. Other side of the coin, he could be the victim.
