I’d like to know where in Taipei I could bring a big bag of unrolled coins to be counted and exchanged to bills.
I’ve been saving them up for a year now and planned to use them to fund a kickass meal before my eventual departure, but since Covid and all I figured I’ll just use them as extra savings.
I’ve always gone to my local bank although I did see people complaining that some banks would not take their coins. Take a smaller amount to a bank you have an account with and try it.
Yes. Banks do this, as do post offices. Im not 100% sure if you need an account or not, so bring yor arc/passport.
This is literally the banks job, and every street vendor brings in kilograms of coins on the ddaily. You go to that counter behind security glass that normally handles large quantities of money withdrawals and deposits. The cop or security guy will tell you when you enter where to go.
The only important thing is to separate them.
I remember bringing 10 years worth of coins from a work car and they had a ton of random stuff (sticks, broken glass, screws etc). He was not thrilled, so make sure they are at least reasonable clean too haha.
Also, lots of small stores, convenience stores and stands love change and need change. They will be happy to help you out cause it makes their lives easier.
The first time I brought coins to a bank here I had separated them all in their denominations and then further into reasonable amounts, NT$2,000 in 50s, NT$1,000 in 10s etc., and carefully wrote the amounts on each bag, the way the banks back home insist on…The staff looked at me as if I was quite special, there was even some covert finger pointing and giggling before they opened the bags and dumped the whole lot, near 60,000NT, into their coin sorting machine at the same time. They smoothed down the bags and returned them to me as if they were precious things…
I hear lots of different experiences, so I guess it really depends on what bank you go to, what equipment they have and how the staff are feeling that day!
Damn in all fairness though, that was on me. I had very good relations with the bank so he still did it because his boss was a very food friend of mine haha. However, every fake coin (there are lots in taiwan, especially in the south), glass, shards, sticks, screws, random scary debris etc he laid out on the counter one by one one and made sure i wasnt missing anything. A very well played passive agressive move that i still respect to this day. Left an impression to say the least! But that cars coin haul paid 3 months rent, a whack of beer and some meals, so it was all fun
@SuperS54 i think you are spot on. I have mostly lived in the sticks here, but i do go to cities to to banking as well. I have seen these glorified betel nut boxes inside the banks that dish out millions in.$1000 stacks packed into bags and boxes…they still have to exchange out their screen size to allow for different count sizes. I only hope they have invested the 3000nt at each branch to avert such inconveniences in the future haha.
The only consistent reality i have seen, nation wide, is the universal hate for enabling $20 coins. What a pity, my favorite coin…
