Coming with wife, doesn't want to work

So I will soon be in Taiwan to teach English, but I was wondering how it is going to work with my wife. She doesn’t want to work, so won’t be getting an ARC. Can she live off of mine? Is there additional paperwork I need to fill out (if I go with a contract signed vs. if I show up on a tourist visa?)? Any info from those in this situation would be very helpful.

As long as you are married she can live off your ARC as a dependent. But really, living off one teacher’s wage is a hard act, I’d pack her off to work. Let’s face it, she’s hardly going to be an expat tai tai.

Neither do any of us, but I say “Boo hoo”. Tell her to get a job like the rest of us.

Geez, can’t we be a little nicer to a newbie guys? I know we Forumosans aren’t the big meanies that everyone says we are.

We don’t know this guys family situation. Who cares if his wife wants to work or not? That’s none of our business. He’s not asking about the financial situation of one spouse not working, he’s asking about the VISA situation. Which has already been answered. So there’s really no need for any further comments.

I agree, but what do you expect from a guy like Chris? He kicks puppies and makes faces at babies until they cry. He always sits in the seats reserved for old people and pregnant ladies on the MRT and he makes a point of not showering for a week before every Forumosa Happy Hour.

Actually, SAlexander, as the very knowledgeable
(He knows a lot about drinking, for example)
Huang Guang Chen mentions, she can live as your dependent.

It actually becomes more complicated is she decides to work. She would have to get her own working visa.

Both of you COULD live off one teacher’s wage. You should be able to pull in 60,000 a month no probs. You’re not going to save anything though.

Muahahaaahaahahaa! :smiling_imp:

It’s going to be hard for her, one of the easiest ways to build connections with local people (Taiwanese and Foreigners) is through work connections… These can easily expand into all kinds of relationships, not just work-based.

I’d encourage her to find work her otherwise she’ll probably go out of her mind after a few months. Yes, there’s a lot to do here, she’ll need something to focus on: a list for her: work, charity-work, personal committed hobbies (her own passions), setting up a business, learning Chinese (or a myriad of other Chinese-related subjects), or (not to be sexist here) looking after family (whether it be children, husband, in-laws, out-laws, whatnot)… The point is that she’s going to need some basis to interact with the local community, and each of these ways provides a great deal of contact.

BTW, anyone want to marry me, and provide me with a chance not to work! I"d be a great “supportive” partner for anyone who’d love to keep me in the Tech Gear, LCD TVs, and exotic foods, that I would LOVE to become accustomed to.

Just kidding, I’m already married. Boy, and she’s my boss! Yikes! better get to work before she sees this!

Dunno Ken,
I don’t socialise with or network through a single person from work. I’ve met stacks of great people through this site though.

And he refuses to adopt stray kittens. :frowning:

I already have a Kitty!
