Contemporary art and design in Taiwan?

Hi, I coming to Taiwan in september, and I am interested to know more about the contemporary art scene in Taiwan, if any?

I have worked in art/design in Japan for a long time, and I am interesting to see if there are any opportunities for me to start something going in Taipei.

What are the best galleries in Taipei? Is there an interest in contemporary art amongst the locals? Is the scene growing or not? Any specific areas with a booming art scene? Are there any galleries specializing in international artists or is it mainly a domestic affair? Any artist initiatives/alternative art spaces? Who are the persons to talk to if you would like to bring foreign artist to Taiwan? What about modern design, any interest in that? etc. etc.

Any info/suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

Maybe this helps as a starting point: MOCA

I’ve heard of a place where they house international artists with studio space and people can go around looking at their art whether it’s finished or still in progress. I read about it in a Taiwan travel guide, it’s in Taipei somewhere.

You’re probably thinking of the place at the NE corner of Tianjin Street and Beiping Road. It’s east of Taipei Main Station, but the Shandao Temple MRT station is closer.

For contemporary art, the IT Park gallery is fairly well known. It’s small, so you’re not likely to see many artists there on display at the same time; but it’s a good place to meet people involved in the local art scene. The opening of a show there would be best for this.
