Coronavirus Open Thread 2021

The money to pay excessively high paid players needs to come from somewhere.

So
it was a Good Thing that backward countries indulged in the full range of lockdown madness, because that created a vast underclass of poor and disgruntled people who can then be “saved” by the same governments, who will invest in “education and heath” and “redistribute” the wealth of those who managed to cling onto the precipice?

I’m afraid I see a few minor issues with that proposition. Still, this time it might work, eh?

Could we please discuss China?

By most reports, that they largely have covid under control. I have friends in the country who are CCP members in good standing and friends who hate the gov’t and all say, basically, the same. Flare ups in random places. Neighborhoods get closed for a few days. Massive testing. Nearly everybody vaccinated.

Now, how did they do this?

They locked down hard initially.
They have fairly strict border control but no more than a lot of other countries.
A huge percent of the population is vaccinated with a vaccine that is not that efficient.
They are certainly lying about the numbers to some extent.

My current theory is that incentives are aligned to where if people die or get sick, they can cover it up but if the economy crashes, parts of Xi’s body come detached from other parts of his body. Compare that to a country like Taiwan where if things are locked down and the economy crashes, we were ‘following science’ whereas if they permit dining in restaurants and three people die in an old folks home, you won’t hear about anything else in the next election.

Anybody else?

I know the lede on the evening news but it’s black and Hispanic people who are lagging behind in vaccination rates in the US.

Though there’s a lot of ‘red state, blue state’ reports floating around (and 80% of Democrats surveyed thought the vaccine was unsafe before 26 January and nearly 80% thought it was safe in early February, with Republicans doing a similar, though less drastic flop in the other direction), when broken down a bit more, it’s ‘wealthier states, poorer states’.

How’s this vaccine. I prefer the more traditional and don’t want anything tinkering with DNA

I already have autoimmune and anaphylaxis issues to consider

seeker, your best bet could be novavax and maybe the tw one in the future.

Novavax? Is that an option here?
I work with kids
I may be forced into a choice.

You won’t be forced into a choice, you are going to need to schedule a doctors appointment with your most trusted doctor and discuss the best possible option for you.

FYI: There’s an entire thread dedicated to this topic.

From my call to invest in education and health, to an image of shooting a young girl in the back of the head . . .

Forumosans can figure out for themselves how useful this, uh, rapid escalation is for them.

The next time my daughter needs tuition money, I’ll just send that photo and see how far it gets me.

UK is heading towards a CCP/National Socialism style government with plans for only the double jabbed with ‘papers’ allowed into clubs and big venues from September.
Even if there was 100% jabbed, there would still be these ‘passports’ rolled out.
Just last month a parliamentary committee came to this conclusion. Ignored of course as it is not part of the agenda

If a healthy person without “Covid” cannot enter a crowded public place, but a double jabbed person, carrying “Covid”, can, then this is not and never has been about a “virus”.
It would not end with just the jabs for a flu to have your ‘passport’.
I also forgot there will be a vote to extend the emergency decree in September. We should expect a huge number of cases just before the vote to make sure the spineless politicians on both sides of the houses of Parliament vote to extend the madness.

Great news.

Make life as difficult and unbearable as possible for the sort of antivax wankers who have been blocking access to vaccine centers, even burning them down, setting 5G towers alight and even booking fake appointments so vaccines have to be thrown away.

I hope they can now do nothing except sit at home watching Mrs. Brown’s Boys without a vaccine.

Some findings from the report:

  • The government failed to make the scientific case for the passports . Neither did they show the passports had any justification in logic.

  • The choice of locations requiring the passports was based on random choice and/ or personal whim, and not any particular science.

  • The passport will proportionately discriminate on the basis of race, religion, age and socio-economic background.

  • The passport has the potential to cause great damage socially and economically.

  • The passport will be established at great cost for rapidly diminishing returns.

No doubt these people are undertandably frustrated with the government’s responses to the pandemic, which many believe - and like the UK Parliamentary Committee found - is unscientific, illogical, discriminatory, a waste of money, as well as overly infringing on their personal rights and freedoms (see above report).

Some mock the 5G conspiracy theorists as being unscientific and illogical, foolish, selfish. Interestingly, that’s precisely what the UK Committee concluded but in relation to the govt and their rollout of Covid passports.

There’s plenty of anti-science Covid stuff going on, that’s for sure, but it looks like that’s happening on all sides.

Some of these protestors may also label the pro-vaxxers and government health officials and politicians as ‘wankers’ too. That term is applied liberally.

Also, someone may not want the vaccine for reasons other than simply being “anti-vax.” They may just not like how this vax is being shoved (voluntarily, of course) down everyone’s throats (arms).

Also, the people burning towers and so on would claim what the government and Covid industry are doing is far worse than the small disruption they themselves are doing.

Do I agree with their actions? Well, I wouldn’t partake, but I do understand it. But neither do I agree with the government and industry attitude towards the situation.

It’s like a science project. On 7/1 all the people in Oregon who wanted the get vaccinated were vaccinated and all the masks came off. Now it’s nothing.

After 7/1 it became the Covid skeptics turn to get immunized the old fashioned way and the graph line started back up again, reaching numbers not seen since April. If this keeps up we should reach herd impunity by October if we’re lucky.

You can track the results in Oregon in comparison with the results in the UK, which has announced its “freedom day” and—if I understand their experiment correctly—taken things to the next level by also opening up cross-border travel.

Guy

Next level? Oregon is the real next level. It’s never had quarantines, contact tracing, organized testing even during the worst, pre-vaccination days of the pandemic. Now when you’re out in public it’s rare to see anyone wearing a mask anywhere. It’s like no one is in charge here.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Taiwan soon. :slightly_smiling_face:

Guy

I’m not stalking you but what part of the state are you in? I’ve heard that zero masks are to be seen from Bend eastward but rates vary between Portland and Eugene.
