So how do I persuade them to give that reverence to me? Having everyone like you is nice, but having everyone worship you is divine. I may be a chief, but I am not yet a god.
Say that by giving you money for some token you will speak with their loved ones. It works for joss. Maybe get some bronze tokens and tell then it’s gold and that by buying it will be giving to their loved ones.
So I log into forumosa, and see that there are 25 new posts in the “Coronavirus - Taiwan 2021” thread. Holy sh&t! I thought. Has all hell broken loose with the pilots and the other recent local cases?!?
Then I see you guys are arguing about wearing masks. I have rarely been so relieved to see people arguing about this topic.
Guy
Too much on the headline here - its about returning to Australia direct or via a transfer in another country (Qatar, Malaysia, Singapore are the main ones) if they have been in India in the past 14 days. After that, its quite OK - though many have shut the door to India at present, so difficult anyway.
All students in affected classrooms at 2 schools in Taoyuan have been tested/are being tested. No development there.
From the hotel, the employees have been tested. The CECC suspects infection was older, early April.
From testing, they got 4 probable cases. From blood, one positive for antibodies and it was already a case.
You guys are going to be envious of the schedule of some of these cases. One went to Alishan on vacation, camping, etc. ![]()
Oh and one went to Beigang, the Mazu temple. ![]()
We are waiting by the edge of our seat as there is an alleged situation with the bus driver that took the hotel dwellers and employees to government quarantine site… FALSE ALARM
Several cases have the British variant.
They are not sure if the hotel employees gave it to the pilots. Or if there is something in the environment, like the air conditioning.
The press are making a big fuss about the employees not wearing masks, foreign pilots should be put in a different building, etc…
I have stuff to do, I won’t listen anymore.
Exactly.
I have a friend, you know the MIT one, she makes fun of people wearing masks in their cars. With the smog pollution in the old country, that is highly advisable, but just for the record, if you are getting off the car in an indoor parking lot in a mall or office building or do not want to soil the mask by constantly touching it, it is ok. Nothing to scorn like my pal likes to do.
I live inside a traditional market, which is one of the places where mask wearing is enforceable. If I go out to walk my doggie, I wear a mask because I also may stop to buy a drink, pay a bill, buy something. I will also stop to chat the neighbors.
I wear it at work though not at my place like I did during SARS because I do not know where my coworkers have been all the time and we may be in contact with people who may be more likely to bump into cases. I also visit the hospital regularly and if I get the bug, I would not like to give it to my coworkers.
One last reminder to foreigners: we are under scrutiny. Recently I saw a group of foreigners in a food court restaurant - not the most airy of places- waiting for their turn without masks. Do not wave red flags in front of bulls, ok? Yes, it is your choice, but it endangers all. And I do not mean only sickness.
There is talk of not letting foreign airline personnel stay in Taiwan hotels. That is trickling down as not allowing foreign pilots in. This is quite an issue. We are the thin dog that gets all the fleas.
I guess they should stay in their plane, camping out.
Sadly so true.
I know the feeling. This always happens when I’m watching their pressers.
They are barring citizens from returning, there are no good excuses here. And they are doing it because they can’t quarantine any more people, which Taiwan never had a problem with. Hence why it’s in this thread because it shows Taiwan did more than just respond early, it responded efficiently and smartly.
Focus Taiwan has posted a report on today’s CDC press conference.
One new local transmission reported: a kid of one of the infected pilots (very young—under five—and in quarantine since April 25).
Guy
How is the kid? Symptomatic or asymptomatic? We often hear so and so tested positive, but don’t hear how serious that infection is. I hope the kid is doing ok.
According to another report, symptomatic:
[The child] developed a fever on April 29 and was taken to hospital for tests. The positive diagnosis will lead to two relatives having to extend their quarantine to May 15, according to officials.

Also in the Taiwan News report linked above: an update on the Novotel Hotel cluster, now extending to affect folks in Chiayi, including some at CCU in Minhsiung:
one of the infected Novotel workers had traveled around the country, including a stay at a bed and breakfast in Chiayi County, where four teachers and students of National Chung Cheng University [aka CCU] also spend some time. The school had taken the necessary precautions, while the B&B owners and the four teachers and students moved into a quarantine hotel.
Any forumosans affiliated with CCU should have a look at this announcement ASAP:

Well the local talk shows are bringing it down on the old guy and the hotel employees. The old guy… can’t even. But it seems that in the hotel case there could have been some dereliction of duties, with maximizing earnings taking precedent over safety and following the anti epidemic protocols. The employees are in hot water for going to work, having meetings and even go on vacation while sick. Who’d figure?
Of course, there is more investigation to do and more testing to find out what happened.
From what I understand almost all cases have been related to indoor transmission .
Seeing 40+ replies, I thought shit had hit the fan …
In early days, one notable counter-example was a female security guard (was this in Xindian?) having a long animated maskless conversation with a neighbour outdoors. Under these conditions, her neighbour was infected.
