Coronavirus - Taiwan 2021

Great news in Kao City. Keep COVID away.

You probably didn’t know, but the lizhang was arrested, taken down to the police station for interrogation and to make a statement regarding his actions and answer the question “WTF were you thinking?”. He’s probably going to be fined by a judge for this breech of privacy.

What a knucklehead!

Ohhh right, thanks - I don’t remember seeing a yellow label the first time. I’m actually not really familiar with the prices there since it just switched over from Wellcome…but NT$60 seems relatively expensive for bleach, no? (My budget app says I’ve always paid between NT$40 and NT$49 for bleach, and I guess the higher price this time is what made me notice and check.)

This dilemma reminds me of something I read a few years ago when French intelligence was being blasted for not preventing the 2015 terrorist attacks there. Their argument was basically “look, we have 20,000 potential Islamic radicals in the country. Even tracking one person involves 3 or 4 full-time agents and 95% of these angry radicals will never progress to actual violence, so who do you choose to track when you have limited resources and manpower?” Not exactly the same situation with tracking potential COVID cases, but similar.

You keep record of each and every item you buy?
My budget app just says “supermarket”…

I do. What I confess puzzled me about @Andrew’s post is buying bleach often enough to be able too say “I’ve always paid __”. Am I doing something wrong that my bottle of bleach is possibly over a decade old? It basically comes out for a splash down the kitchen sink every so often - that’s about it.

Will there be a press conference today?

Some people use it for laundry and cleaning. You like your whites to be white and your bathroom to be clinical? Bleach it. Bottoms of shoes and entrance to home are areas that some people might bleach more often in these days of covid…

It had problems with my number yesterday too. I tried again this morning and it worked.

Some of it is automatic via the phone network, also they use facial recognition via the security network.

If they are using the system I think they are using, the normal maximum is 10,000 contacts per day the theoretical is unlimited. This is limited by the honesty of the contact.

What they then do with the information after that I’m not sure. And how the determine who to test is not understood by me.

The software is very much the same as used in casinos, airports and used by the police in UK, USA and Australia.

You could make your own facial tracking software with a simple python script.

Not to be the voice of non-doom and, yes, I’ve seen pictures of empty shelves online, but I just got back from a traditional market that is…slightly busier than usual but not panic-buying in sight and no problem getting whatever you normally get from a traditional market for regular traditional market prices.

I even stopped by to pick up my NHI-subsidized supply of masks for the next two weeks with no problem.

I did notice a line outside the PX Mart on the way home but it appeared to be simply from people having to provide contact details upon entering.

Streets are apocalyptic empty though.

Yes, even in the south. Still so many oldies either wearing the chin-strap look or not wearing a mask at all.

I assume so. Is it good news we haven’t heard about another “emergency” conference?

I mean we have now so many experiences from different countries all over the world that went through quarantine and none of them had suffer from food / water / toilet paper / whatever out of stock.

We can hope that except from the one always panicking and that enjoy calling for doom / the end of the world, some people have understood that there is no need to buy 10 bags of rice.

I think it’s also because it’s a pain in butt now with all the real name registration everywhere. Went through the drive thru on my motorcycle at McDonald’s this morning to avoid that.

I think that 100% of the people that I saw not wearing masks were over…70 (?) or smokers. (Not including people who were obviously by themselves on hiking trails, etc and who pulled masks on when you passed.)

If you want to avoid wearing a mask, simply wander around with a lit cigarette in your hand.

You’re welcome.

So will the numbers be lower or higher than 180 today? I’m cautiously optimistic since I haven’t heard any apocalyptic leaks like yesterday morning. But maybe that’s wishful thinking.

Ill guess low 100s

Slightly lower?

I think we’re going to see elevated numbers for a few days simply due to increased testing. I would be more worried by 40+ cases in the south than 150+ in Taipei.

Over/under…120.
