Gee… It’s almost like the science is not the only factor to consider when making a decision.
Right. How about the other factors being “stuff they pulled out of their ass”?
There’s a psychological phenomenon known as “learned helplessness”. When an animal (or human) finds itself in a situation where, no matter what he/she/it does, it gets punished regardless, without any apparent reason, it becomes pretty much catatonic. It can be pushed around and will not resist anything. The punishments do not have to be draconian; just constant irritation, randomly applied, can do the job.
IMO, these mindless rules, which have no logical basis and can be enforced arbitrarily, are designed to induce that state in the populace.
It could be that (some) politicians are doing it instinctively, without understanding the theory. Others are doing it deliberately on professional advice.
I can only be relieved that people who choose to ignore almost all factors and narrowly focus on a single one with extreme tunnelvision when making a decision are not policymakers with power in Taiwan.
