Coronavirus Vaccine in Taiwan - July/August 2021

I believe mixing might be the only answer and so it will be given the green light. Let’s not forget the BNT vaccines next month (I think it was) that could be used for this.

Give as many as possible their first shot was a strategy decision. Tough call but the decision has been made. Let’s see what happens.

Mixing isn’t THE answer, but it is one answer. Mixing would give much needed flexibility to how vaccines are allocated and buy some time until more shipments come in.

What vaccines are you planning on mixing? The people that need second doses first are people that took AZ, we don’t have Moderna or Az right now since it was all distributed for first vaccines are you going to mix with Medigen?

I’m not personally planning. I’m just saying that flexibility should be there for the general public. That way we don’t have to worry about reserving X number of stockpiles of this vaccine for a second dose, when we can assign a second dose from a more available vaccine. The science says it’s safe.

The first delivery, as you mentioned, will be in September, with 1 million doses expected some time that month.

The AZ first shot, Pfizer/BNT second shot regime seems to have been widely used in places such as Canada and elsewhere. I think that’s what Trudeau in Canada and Merkel in Germany received.

I agree that mRNA plus AZ is well studied and has shown good effectivness, but it’s not going to do much good when it’s going to arrive sometime in September but we need second doses in Mid-August. Plus there was already talk about prioritizing the BNT for 12-18.

All indications are we will have greater stock of AZ in August than Moderna. You give people who had first shot Moderna the option of second shot AZ and hope at least some have come around on it.

They need to stop that talk then. We are not at the point where we can transition to vaccinating kids when not even half of adults are vaxxed. CECC getting ahead of itself as usual.

EDIT: Okay, I saw your earlier point about the the second doses needed for those who had AZ with the first. Well… it’s not ideal, but I think if you got the first AZ shot in May, you should still be okay getting dose 2 in September by which time things will hopefully have improved. October would be a different story.

I think we either get an additional donation of AZ from Japan, or the timing of the second dose unfortunately gets pushed back. Otherwise I agree it’s hard to see how the numbers line up.

I’m not worried about the Moderna people they knew when the signed up that there was very limited Moderna ordered and even less being delivered, and they were risking not getting their second doses on time.

I do think the government should have done a better job planning for second doses of the AZ vaccine though, it’s important that we get the priority groups fully vaccinated, that’s why they were priority groups.

CECC have kept most of currently available Moderna for second doses, no?

No problem for me, being selfish now.

Anyways, the best combination is first AZ, second Pfizer.

" However, the exact benefits depend on which vaccine goes first and which second. Taking the AstraZeneca vaccine followed by the Pfizer one resulted in a striking increase in antibodies against the coronavirus’s spike protein (a key part of its outer structure) compared to using the AstraZeneca vaccine for both doses or Pfizer followed by AstraZeneca.

Taking the AstraZeneca vaccine followed by Pfizer resulted in a better T cell response than all other combinations of doses. T cells – also known as [T lymphocytes] – are immune cells that help kill invading germs (such as the coronavirus) and support antibody production."

3,650,000 Moderna doses have been delivered.
2,995,206 arms (including those attached to my partner and I) have received a Moderna dose, 119,528 of which has been second doses.
That leaves 654,794 left - so they better save at least 2 for my partner and I in mid September!!

And AZ availability is down to 759,435, so yes, we need more of both.

They kept a couple hundred thousand doses for priority group 1-3 and pregnant women, but no where close to the 1.92 million that will reach the 10-12 week period around September 10.

5,050,000 ordered and also the USA donation of 2,500,000
1,150.000 of the order have been delivered.

As to signing up for Moderna, at the time that my partner and I ‘signed up’ there was no choice, you got what was given, which happened to be Moderna. Yes later ones have had a choice.

My own morbid curiosity about how vaxxed this board is.

  • 1 dose AZ
  • 2 doses AZ
  • 1 dose Moderna
  • 2 doses Moderna
  • Not able to get a shot yet, but want one (any is ok)
  • Don’t want any vaccine unless I have to
  • Want one, but waiting for Medigen
  • Want one, but waiting for Pfizer

I think in all likelihood we’ll be getting more shots/boosters for this in the years ahead, so I am not stressing which vaccine I get or even when I get it. I’m fine with AZ, with mixing, with Taiwan’s own vaccines, etc.

I think the overall health of the island is the immediate goal and I’m grateful to Taiwan for getting shots into as many people as possible.

You need to update the choices to count the members who fled Taiwan on “Vaccination runs” to the USA and other places where the choice was wider.
