Cost of owning a dog

unless you have a butcher hookup, I have a hard time imagining a raw diet being cheaper than a big industrial bag of cheap dry food.

gland expression you might never need. ears and nails shouldn’t generally need to be done every week unless the dog has ear issues and you’re never walking the dog.

that’d be good. but I’ve never met anyone who actually does this.

dogs don’t need yearly blood tests generally. my (very fancy) vet presents it as an option, and never suggests it’s really necessary. I don’t recall previous vets ever even mentioning yearly blood work.

hahahahahaa!

Icon gave a full rundown of possible costs, OP can decide how much he wants to spend.
Same as with kids, you can sign them up for soccer class for 600 NT a lesson, or send them to the park with a ball for free…

Is there any downside to adopting a dog from a shelter? Are they more prone to have medical or behavioral issues?

That’s a good point. They have that blood parasite in Taiwan (Barbesia) it’s a nasty one. I had one dog here that got poisoned in the mountains. Someone was trying to kill stray dogs by putting out poisened dog food. That’s not going to happen in a city but Barbesia could happen. The grass can also rub on a small dog’s stomach giving it allergies.

Get a blood check done or maybe they do that. Behavior ways I’ve found rescued dogs to be really loyal. I’d stay clear of fearful dogs unless you want to invest that time. I haven’t adopted dogs from shelters but I have adopted dumped dogs with skin diseases. The most intelligent dog I had was a stray mountain dog. It was naturally like a circus dog it loved playing games and was freaky intelligent. And as a cross breed had almost no sickness after it’s skin was dealt with. I usually get pure breeds , but my daughter just brought it home and said “Help it dad” and left it in the living room. :joy:
I said “Why didn’t you ask me first”. She said “You might have said no.” Anyway that one passed away of old age. I had it seven years the vet said going by its teeth it looked about 6 when she bought it home

We’re two for two with both allergies and Barbesia. Quite the pickle. Lots of creams and medicine and whatnot.
