Costco engine oil ok?

Some Taiwanese friends told me that castrol, mobile 1 oil here in Taiwan are horrible. Because after they get to Taiwan they process it again and the quality becomes crappy…my question is are the engine oil in costco all original from the states or they processed it after they get to Taiwan?

Does it not have the producer’s name printed on the bottle?

I can’t see why they would concievably “re-process” it. That would just add cost without any benefit to them.

Its just conceivable that they’d adulterate it with some cheaper base oil, though that would be fraud and their suppliers would be pissed off. Seems unlikely.

I think there is a thread about urbman myths allready

I’ve been using Mobil and Castrol synthetic oils from Carrefour, Geant etc. for years without a problem. Some tuner friends have warned me to be careful where I buy it as they believe that there is some fake oil on the market. Then again, they also believe that if you point at the moon, it will cut your ear off…
I think that if you stick with a big box retailer like Costco you’ll be fine. They aren’t going to the ones carrying fakes, if that does indeed happen.

I use Costco Mobil one 0-40 weight exclusively to deal with my pesky Isuzu cold start hydraulic lifter noise.

It’s true that some oils get reprocessed or recycled to remove dirt, particles and such from them and they are then resold under various brand names and reused. I remember we had a Castrol brand in our garage back home that was such an oil. Higher performace cars, we used to put Mobil 1 in, as it was a lower viscosity oil and worked better at higher temperature. Recycling oil is not a myth and is common practice for a few brands. I’m sorry I can’t be more specific as to which brands they are though as oil is not my speciality.

Well, I guess that’d be OK, assuming they do it properly. I didn’t think the OP meant that though when he wrote “processed again after they arrive in Taiwan”. IF it was, and IF Castrol have an oil refining/recycling operation in Taiwan, then you’d think they would apply the same quality standards as elsewhere, in order to safeguard their brand, so its still not consistent with the “Taiwan Castrol is crap” rumour.
