My hubby is going to transit through Narita on the way to the US. He read on the Japan airlines site that he needs a booster for transit through Narita.
Anyone flown through Narita these days? Can you share your experience?
He’s had the one shot J&J back in summer of 2021. We’d prefer to not get another shot but if we do, then I’d like to choose the one formulated for the latest variant.
From the Japan airlines website:
Travelers connecting to an international flight
Travelers who are not entering Japan and transferring directly to a third country by transit, are not required to submit any documents and undergo PCR tests.
However, the following cases require entry into Japan. Please note that foreign nationals are, in general, prohibited from entering Japan for flight connections purposes.
- Transferring between Haneda Airport and Narita Airport or Kansai Airport, or any other airports in Japan
- Travelers with a connecting flight out of Narita Airport the following day
Additionally, for passengers transiting via Japan to another country, please refer to the Entry restrictions for each country and Quarantine Measures information.

When I did this in July, it was a typical airside transit (i.e. no dealing with immigration). After disembarking, follow the signs to the transit area, queue up, go through a security check, then head upstairs (the signs are clear) to the departures level, where you can find the gate to the connecting flight.
Please note that all flights to and from Japan require masks to be worn, and masks must be worn in Narita Airport. Massive numbers of noncompliance spotted by moi among the folks gathered at the gate for an AA flight to Dallas-Fort Worth. The Japanese staff around them looked like they were about to grind their teeth down to their gums as they dealt with these folks.
