Creating a static IP HELP PLEASE!

This is way beyond me so if anyone could help it’d be great.
Using Mac OS X Tiger a modem given to me by Hinet (my ISP) and connetced to Airport Express can I create a static IP?
If yes, how to?
Thanks.

You don’t “create” a static IP address, you only set it. But… It sounds like you are not very sure about this issue, so you might want to get a few things clear:

Your ISP will issue an IP address to you. That address can be either dynamically or statically assigned. Check your contract to find out what applies to you. In both cases, Hinet will give you some information (though probably only for Windows, but it’s the same on Linux or OS X).

For dynamically assigned IP addresses, you need to tell your network configuration tool to use DHCP (or somewhere you might see the word “dynamic” or “automatic”). Usually, everything will be done with that, because DHCP can tell your computer all other relevant settings (subnet, mask, DNS…). But you need to tell your computer to activate PPPoE, because you need to log in. There you fill in the informations given to you by Hinet.

If you purchased a line with static IP address, Hinet should have given you IP address, subnet, netmask and at least one DNS IP address (usually 168.95.1.1). Just set them manually. I suppose you know that on OS X you find all this in the System Preferences’ Network settings?

Sorry, correction: You have Airport Express, so you set all those things on the router and connect it to the modem. You don’t need to set a static IP address for your computer on your own subnet. As long as the router does not run out of addresses to assign, it will give the same IP address to the computer with the same MAC address again and again.

And if you really want to give your computer a static address: Your router should have come with some documentation regarding this case, probably with a specific example which you can just copy.

Ok, once I go home later today, I’ll check this out and post any issues I have.
Thanks a lot for replying.

Step by step how to get a hinet static IP:

You could just call up Hinet, ask for English service, and request a static IP. The guy I got was quite helpfull. You’ll have to figure out how to set that up by yourself on your router. But basically you’ll have to use PPoE and your login name should look something like this

"loginnumber"@ip.hinet.net … opposed to the old login name of "loginnumber"@hinet.net
then your password

As far as setting up your local network, you might want to look to another forum for those questions.
